Gun/Vet geeks: I want, a practical urban defense rifle

Recommended Posts

Now that I live in Arizona. I'd take classes and stuff, but if I had some extra money ... might be fun to have my own assault rifle. Is the AR-15 (aka M-16) the way to go for civil defense? I'm on the surplus M1 list ... but here in Arizona ... that's a kids gun.

Beyond target practice, my interest is civil defense. I guess a repeater shotgun would be best ... but I want to be able to lay down fire and provide cover.

Anyone with real experience suggest something other than an AR-15?

You know what I've always wanted is an old Winchester

The gun that "Won the West". And still a cartridge weapon. The 1895 Model is a .30-06. Pretty serious rifle, if the shiat ever hit the fan ... Osama invaded from Mexico ... I could pull it off the wall and fight.

Someday ....

Plus, you can still pick up old 1895 Winchester pretty cheap because so many were made. $200 will get yet one in good condition ... made in 1935. Still called an 1895, because that's the year the design came out ... but it really didn't change design.

After 9/11 I wanted an AR-15 real bad .... but getting one, even in Jersey was pretty much impossible. An old friend of my Mom's, I remember had a Tommy Gun. 1920's, real thing. This guy may still even have that ... but it was sweet. Did you know that was a .45 cal machine gun? Same ammo as the 1911 .45 Cal Colt pistol. Exact same bullet.

Never fired a Tommy gun but I hear ... and if you see old movies ... the kick seems tremendous. AR-15 doesn't move in comparison.

Tastes like ... a "Baja Advnture".

Upgrading. Adding jalapenos and cheese. Gonna put it on a tortilla.

Why do I get the feeling that some day I'm going to read about you taking an assault rifle to a workplace shootout?

So ... you don't see the value in being able to defend yourself?

I think he sees the value in defending himself, but the idea of you defending yourself, isn't as appealing.

Yeah, with a shotgun, not an assault rifle. Although I guess it would come in handy if a group of 30 criminals broke into your house.

What the FUCK do you need to lay down cover fire for?

First off, an M1 Garand is NOT a kids gun by any means.

2nd, an AR-15 is NOT an M-16

3rd, an AR-15 is a little overboard for home defense. A shotgun is the ideal home defense weapon, although a pistol is much more useable and easier to hide.

If you want an AR-15, get ready to dump about $2k on it, post 9/11.

there are a hundred places to find out how to make it full auto too. Try google.

It's only a steel 'spring' and you can make it out of your house if you had any mechanical aptitude, which I'm going to guess you Don't.

Good Luck with that cover fire.

I would have to reccommend the AR-15 as well. Especially, if you want to go have fun shooting in the desert and not just have it sitting gunder your bed. For home defense, a 12 guage shotgun is a cant miss. I have had much experience with the M-16 in the military and its civilian/ law-eforcement equivalent the Colt AR-15. M-16 is just a military designation for the gun. In the military version there is a select fire wheras you can go three round burst or full auto. You cannot own a fully automatic weapon. I have a Colt and a Bushmaster and they are pretty much the same thing, depends on how many gadgets you want to put on it. The .223 rifle is fun, accurate, relatively cheap to shoot, and has a high capacity for ammo.
