PackerAaron 0 Posted May 10, 2006 From Cliff Christl's weblog- Ted Thompson, general manager of the Green Bay Packers, told this interesting story on draft day, but it pretty much got lost among all the other news. “There were a couple moments here with the Packers when I was here before we were one pick away from Ray Lewis. We had Ray Lewis on the phone and thought he was our pick, and Baltimore took him. In the fourth round in some year, I don’t remember what it was, we had Rodney Harrison’s name written down on the card and had it turned over just waiting for some team to turn in their pick. At the last minute that team makes a trade – we were on the phone and knew who they were going to pick – and, all of a sudden, Rodney Harrison goes right in front of us.” The Baltimore Ravens drafted Lewis with the 26th pick in 1996. The Packers drafted tackle John Michels, 27th. The San Diego Chargers selected Harrison with the 145th pick in the fifth round of the 1994 draft. The Packers took wide receiver Terry Mickens, 146th. Sometimes luck has as much to do with dictating the outcome of a draft as all the time and effort that goes into the preparation.
Flipper 61 Posted May 10, 2006 It almost seems like the same thing happens in the FF drafts. Sometimes you pencil-in a guy and he goes right before you - and drags that team to the bottom of the standings. Sit back and wonder "what if ... what ... if ..." XToday 0 Posted May 10, 2006 The Packers drafted tackle John Michels, 27th I would argue that he was the worst pick Green Bay has ever made in the first. At least with Mandrich they got a few average to below-average starts from him. Michaels sucked royal ass from day 1.

Mandarich was 2nd overall AND was picked just before Barry Sanders.
bjlmonster 0 Posted May 11, 2006 So the Packers are like the guy in my keeper league. Never fails, about round 3, someone drafts his guy right in front of him. No back up plan, he panics , and his draft falls apart. I just love to watch the meltdown when that happens
ROBOKOP 0 Posted May 11, 2006 Packers would have done a little better job stopping Terrell Davis in Superbowl 32 with Ray Ray in the mix.

This is what makes me think the Bills did a good job drafting this year. They had guys that they knew they wanted, and they did what it took to get them, rather than play around and potentially miss out on them.
PackerAaron 0 Posted May 11, 2006 Packers would have done a little better job stopping Terrell Davis in Superbowl 32 with Ray Ray in the mix. Somehow, I doubt it. The problem wasn't the LBs. It was the D-line wearing down. (Not that I would have sniffed at having Lewis...)
gloveus 0 Posted May 11, 2006 The Bills had Huff penciled in as their pick, but Oakland took him one spot before. So instead, with the 8th pick, they took Donte Whitner.
bigums 0 Posted May 12, 2006 I think Buffalo had Whitner penciled in there all along. Mayock predicted they'd take him in his mock when none of the other 'experts' even had him in the 1st round. He had to have known something to make that big of a reach. He also called Sims to Detroit when nobody had him there.

He's sure got sources in several draft rooms around the league...no wonder Kiper hates him.
