Stepford wife Laura Bush living in denial

Recommended Posts

WASHINGTON (AP) — First lady Laura Bush isn't worrying much about President Bush's low poll ratings — she says they're wrong.

"I don't really believe those polls," said Bush, who added that the news media seem to have "a lot of fun" writing front-page stories when ratings are low but ignoring the numbers when they are high. Of course you don't believe those polls, Babycakes: They say that most Americans think your husband is an ass hole.

"As I travel around in the United States, I see a lot of appreciation for him. A lot of people come up to me and say, 'Stay the course,'" she said on "Fox News Sunday."

She also defended her husband's decision to authorize a domestic surveillance program without court approval, saying that Americans understand he has to make tough decisions involving the war on terror.

Critics who question the president's decisions would also be complaining if the U.S. were attacked again, she said.

"If intelligence activities had not been authorized by the president, within the law as they are, and we had a terrorist attack, people would — the question would be the opposite," Bush said. "'Why haven't you been trying to track al-Qaida or links to al-Qaida in the United States?'"

An AP-Ipsos poll earlier this month found that 33 percent of the public approves of Bush's job performance, the lowest of his presidency. Forty-five percent of self-described conservatives now disapprove of the president.

"Of course, some people are unhappy," Laura Bush said. "But I think people know that he is doing what he thinks is right for the United States."
