Small Palmer update

Recommended Posts

The Associated Press reports Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer (knee) was at practice with no brace on his knee as he jumped over pads and threw passes during low-intensity drills Wednesday, May 31.

I think one thing to consider is that there's a big difference between being on the field for opening day and being the 2005 Carson Palmer. Even if he's going to be healthy enough to play, I think I'd still let someone else draft him; I don't think he's going to be nearly as effective as he was. It takes a long time to be able to regain the strength in the knee after a ligament tear, especially one as bad as he suffered. I have a feeling that he's going to be drafted too high and his owners are going to be awfully disappointed...

I'd agree with this if he was a RB or WR..or even a Vick-like QB. At the very worst, I still see him top 10...top 5 if he goes on opening day.

One thing that's going to help him ease into things is an improved defense. They've added Sam Adams and they'll hopefully have two healthy safeties this year (last year's starters played a total of 4 games combined). I'm not hyping them like the next coming of the Bucs, but they'll at least prevent the shootouts,

Air Palmer..that left leg is just a tad bit lower than the right.

I just read an article that said the last thing to come back is full range of motion. Strength wise, they said post surgery is usually stronger because they've tightened up what naturally gets loose over time.

You usually get the full range of motion back within 1-2 months. I'm no pro athlete and they had me try to pedal a stationary bike 2 days after surgery. I was able to sit indian-style with no pain by 1 month, and have my heal touch my butt while on my back(haha, it sounds ridiculous) and in multiple positions by 1-2 months without pain....it's a gradual process. he has the best of the best looking after him

it's totally mental, and from what I hear Carson is like nails.

BINGO....this is EXACTLY why I picked Palmer as my QB #1 with 4.07 in a real draft recently. This is not Joey Suckington we are talking about here. This kid is a man among boys.

Yep.. a knee will be tighter after surgery. I'm too lazy to find the link, but there was an indepth interview with the surgeon who did McGahees knee surger. He said the knee was more stable and stronger than it was before his injury because of the techniques they use with repairs. Motion, pain etc should be a thing of the past now, but he will need to work hard to either get his core strength back and get his legs under him. Being inactive for that long, you lose muscle mass and strength in the surrounding muscle groups.

I also agree that there is a bigtime mental issue that goes into these things. The players are ALWAYS cautious with their repair work and tentative but once he realizes his knee isn't going to collapse under him if he plants on it, he will be fine. Then its just a matter of practice and more practice.

He is lucky it wasn't his plant knee though... his left is used for balance and direction, not power and support. His accuracy may take some time to come back, as well as his timing, but his power should be good to go.
