Gonzo wants to end his career in KC

Chiefs | Gonzalez wants to end his career in Kansas City

Sat, 3 Jun 2006 09:14:10 -0700

Rick Dean, writing for Morris News Service, reports Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez has made it clear he wants to end his career in Kansas City, but he refused to discuss contract negotiations with the Chiefs. The team also wants to sign him to a long-term deal that will allow him to finish his career as a Chief. As is the case with all business deals, the financial terms must add up properly for both parties. Gonzalez's contract runs through the 2006 season. It is hardly a secret that Gonzalez spends little of his offseason in Kansas City. It's even less of a secret that the Chiefs wish he'd spend more here in offseason conditioning with his teammates. Gonzalez believes new offensive coordinator Mike Solari, the former offensive line coach, is a kindred spirit who will look for a tight end in scoring zone situations. "As soon as he got the job, I flew back here to meet with (Solari) and coach (Jon) Embree, my new position coach. He asked me straight-up what routes I thought worked best, and he said he'd get them called. We'll see what happens, but I have (no) doubt that he'll get me the ball."

It was humor, Einstein. Maybe 5  emoticons would have helped you understand. Shall I pick on your typing skills or your rush to judgement? How about I just respond to your numbers with the facts you so desire rather than launch a personal attack.

2 TDs for a TE who has been DOMINANT was more than a little low. He had 0 100-yard games last year, compared with 6 the year before. His 11.6 ypc that you pointed out was his lowest in 5 years. He had 9 catches over 20 yards, his fewest since 1999.

On a team with limited receiving talent like the Chiefs, you expect their dominant receiver - who happens to be their TE - to come through BIG. When their primary RB Holmes goes down with an injury, you expect their TE to play more of a role in the red zone and increase his TDs. Yes, Johnson was a monster in replacement of Holmes. Yes, the line had injuries that meant Gonzo was going to stay in and block. The offensive coordinator, well known for his exceptional use of talent, didn't find a way to use Gonzo in the red zone or to stretch the middle of the field.

Did Saunders know something about Gonzo's skill level? He may have, since he could have brought in another TE as a blocker (Dunn) and split Gonzo out wide, or gone to a 2-TE set with Gonzo on the weak side where he could release into a pattern. Gonzo disappeared in games against above-average defenses (54 total receiving yards against DEN in 2 games last year), and he didn't do that in years past.

His skills are on the decline. I don't expect a rebound this year - and I don't expect him to drop off the face of the planet. My humble, obviously uneducated, non-fact-looking-at opinion is that he's in his last 2 years of average or above-average productivity, and that he wont be the dominant force he was.

I believe last year Gonzo's low production was due to the fact he was assigned blocking duties because of Roaf's nagging injury. When Roaf returned Gonzo's TE production got better. I'll be looking at Gonzo this year for I think many other FF owners will be gun shy and he might drop to the later rounds.
