Draft strategy for IDP leagues

Recommended Posts

I'm a second year player looking to join and IDP league. After reading almost every article on here last year, I was pretty comfortable drafting in a standard type league. In general, take RBs early, wait on the QBs, take the Def and K with the last picks.

What are some suggestions for a strategy with IDPs. I understand nothing is written in stone and it depends on the scoring, but for typical scoring, what do you suggest.

Incidentally if you know of any IDP keeper leagues, I am interested in joining.

Scott

P.S. While I am at it, what is the difference between a keeper league and a dynasty league?

Well it depends on how many IDPs you start and what defensive positions you play.

In my IDP keeper league, we play 3 DL/LB, 2 DB, and one Util. If DLs and LBs are grouped together like on yahoo, then draft all middle linebackers. For DBs, strong safeties are generally the most valuable.

At most, just use one top 10 pick on a top middle linebacker, but also base it on how other people are drafting. The top 10 MLBs are all very similar, so don't be the first person to draft one, but if you can, try to get 2 of them. I find that it makes a big difference. As for an IDP that fills your last starting position, you can always wait, because new great IDPs come out every year. Last year, my strategy led me to this lineup of IDPs: Polamalu and G.Wilson at DB and Vilma, Bulluck, Peterson at LB with the last D spot often rotated between the likes of Pacman Jones (great if your league counts return yards) and Arrington and Morgan.

I'm in a very deep IDP league

8 starting defensive spots, 4 DL/LB, 2 DBs, 2 Util

I'm actually going defense very high this year. Last year through some miracle trade work, I accumulated a defense compromised of all studs and they would obliterate opponents every week. The highest defender in my league was Mike Peterson at about 130 pts, which roughly compares to a decent #2/3 wr, but this year since the RBs are so un-sexy I'm starting my IDP run in the 5th round or so. Normally our defensive runs start at around the 7th round. With a staggering defense, you can win games on a weekly basis moreso than drafting middle of the road offensive players with little upside (willie parker and the lot). My corps last year was lofa tatupu, donnie edwards, zack thomas, odell thurman, ray lewis, and brian urlacher with adrian wilson and darren sharper. (Remember the Sharper 3 int, td game? A bruiser indeed!) At times, they were putting up 80 pts or so by themselves, and our weekly average for any given team is about 90 pts total!

I want to secure studs like Vilma and Peterson early on, and get proven contributers like farrior and antonio pierce in the double digit rounds. I don't know how your league is with trades, but sometimes our coaches get so defense-envious that they trade pretty good players for a stud DL. They're also great throw ins and trademakers

If you decide to hold off on defense, you can still get 2 or 3 "solid" guys that'll get you atleast 6 tackles a game, but you'll really need to work the waiver wire to find those gems (last year: lofa tatupu, demarrio williams, angelo crowell, etc)

This is 2 years old now but the principles still apply:

Read and React Defense (IDP primer)

Difference between keeper and dynasty... Keeper you select X players to keep off your prior year roster, and often forfeit a draft pick to do so. Dynasty you keep all players from your prior year roster. A dynasty league could have a relaxed offseason roster limit which then could potentially result in some player cuts at set dates.

Thanks for each of the replies. There were all helpful. I am anxiously looking for a good IDP league.
