Top WRs

Recommended Posts

A recent trend I have noticed is the fact that after the first five or six RB off the top of a draft there is a cloud of unease with who to take next. The RB ranked after them seem inter-changeable and as a result many seem to want to go WR or P.Manning there. As a way to defend this strategy the masses have taken to saying things like "take the guarnteed stud WR and get RB in round 2/3 or beyond" its not that I'm completely against taking a WR early if value is there, it is the idea i see spreading that the top WR are super locks.

RBs are much more often injured than WR obviously, but they also score higher in most league formats too. The top of the RB food chain, see last year, is usually unclear after a few super stud choices. Last year K.Jones, J.Lewis, and C.Dillon were in the mix to be taken directly after the top flite backs, sometimes sneaking into the first round. At the time there was no consensus on who to take after the top five, as a result a lot of teams were burned by weak RB1 from the get-go. There is the same cloud this year, and owners uneasy after last year.

There seems to be a revolt almost against going RB/RB as cliche, or the old way of doing things. This of course isn't the best way to do things every time, but I just want to warn against going with what seems a new trend "just because."

Top tier RB are still the hallmark of most winning FF teams, and WR have disappointed in the past, though those stats are brushed aside. You hear a lot more about McAllisters/Holmes season enders, then S.Smith and J.Walker respective injuries. WR can disappear because of injury or bad play around them just as quickly as RB, so beware counting the top WR as guarntee, and if you do back them up appropriately as you would a top RB.

Maybe it's a recent trend for a reason. People are winning with it. Of course having a stud RB is important but once you get past the studs, it's a toss up. I've seen early drafts where guys are taking a RB in the 1st, then taking Julius Jones or Kevin Jones over T.O., Harrison, and Moss. I completely understand trying to get that stud RB in the 1st round but passing on those receivers in the 2nd round to get a shaky commodity like Julius Jones? He may not even be the top FF running back on his own team this year. Meanwhile, Harrison is automatic double digit td's every year, and TO and Moss are capable of putting up the equivalent to RB #1 numbers on your team.

The past 2 years I've travelled off the beaten path and gone either a RB/WR/WR or a RB/WR/QB and both years I had winning teams. Give me a Steven Jackson in the 1st, Peyton Manning in the 2nd, and a Randy Moss in the 3rd this year and I'd be ecstatic with my roster. Then I'll go get guys like Corey Dillon or Warrick Dunn who could easily outplay Kevin Jones or Julius Jones this year.

i think 7 or 8 wrs are warranted a 2nd round pick or better in a 12 teamer. chad, smith, holt, TO, harrison, fitz, randy and maybe boldin. and i'd love to have any of them. it's probably better to get one of them in the 2nd and get a back in the 3rd because i think rbs 10-25 or so are all pretty similar but these guys are the cream of the crop at wr.

i really like this thinking however i would rather go stud like Jackson and then follow up with 2 WR.... Moss Holt and then look for RB like dunn and dillon

i think i am probably going to follow this route this season unless i pick near the end of the first round and can get say edge and caddy i dont think u pass that up
