some ADVICE for people asking for help.

Recommended Posts

The last weeks or so I've been checkin out the help board, posting some questions, trying to answer as many of yours as I intelligently can. I've noticed many newbies (and a few geeks) posting up posts like this:

"WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MICHAEL VICK? TRADE, DROP, START?"

or

"RATE MY AWESOME / GREAT / KILLER / SWEET / MONEY TEAM! <insert generic list of players here>"

A gentle word of advice that will help YOU get better answers to your questions, help US answer you more accurately and intelligently, and cut down on the junk traffic on the help board. PLEASE give us some details in your posts.

A simple rule to follow would be to include your league scoring system for the relevent players, your roster position requirements, the number of teams in your league, whether its a re-draft or a dynasty/keeper league, and any other misc unique info about your league. There is a big difference in having Michael Vick in a league that awards more points for rushing yardage than passing... penalties for INTs, starting two QBs... etc. There is alot of variety in the fantasy football world, please don't assume that your league is just like everybody else's.

A simple solution to this is, if you're planning on posting here often, take a couple minutes and put this information in your signature. To do this, go to "My Controls" at the top right of the page, then under personal profile click on "Edit Signature." You can put up all the relevent info into your signature, and simply include a line in your post saying "for all my league info, see my sig."

One more piece of advice. Add these three easy words: "leave a link" to your post. (and mean it!) This should be a board where all of our knowledge combined (like captain planet) can solve problems. If somebody helps you out and asks you to return the favor, do it! And / or be proactive and browse around the board looking for topics that you might know something about, give some advice and link to your own question. Develop a good reputation for answering posts and you'll see the help you recieve increase as well.

If you take this simple advice, everyone will benefit.

Thanks for listening, see you on the board, and good luck this fantasy football season!

Well put lefty. I also have noticed that Lefty has been around answering questions he knows about this last week.

Please do not post here, leave, come back and expect answers. Please do your part to help others and you in turn will recieve more help.

Also, Rate my team questions won't get much help. I don't answer them as they take too long to look at and usually don't really have much value to managing your team. Instead ask a different question, like Will Eli, Brees, and Rivers get me through the season?

thanks monster, quick bump cause it looks like some people still need to read this...

We'll try to get this pinned in some format soon. Kind of busy around here, but thanks for posting this thread. And thanks for assisting :first:

Hey lefty great advice. I myself being a "newbie" to ff try to add all relevant information to my questions, but when it comes to answering others questions I may not have the answers and would mostly be putting my opinion and I'd hate to steer someone down the wrong path since I'm learning about how this all works myself. I agree though this topic should be pinned as it is awesome advice for those of us who are just getting out feet wet.

Great info Lefty. I agree that this should be pinned.

I also have been hanging around this board alot lately, trying to help out as many people as I can and I have seen alot of those questions also. Maybe you could also add that if you don't plan on helping others out to not even bother posting yours. I absolutley hate the people that need questions answered, don't help out anyone else, and then throw a hissy fit because noone would help them.

just so ya know...newbies/rookies wouldnt even think of reading a "pinned" post anyways...so pin it or not...its still going to happen...HTH

well, When I was new to the site, I thought 'Pinned' meant you need a password to read & respond and I didnt bother to open them.

maybe the word 'sticky' would be better as most people know what that means.

Just some friendly advice.
