hoffdaddy 1 Posted September 15, 2006 http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=497925 Packers stay the course Green Bay vows to stick to the run By LORI NICKEL lnickel@journalsentinel.com Posted: Sept. 14, 2006 Green Bay - Even with a team as young as Green Bay's, it was stunning when the Packers were shut out against Chicago on Sunday, coming no closer than 35 yards to the end zone and converting just one of 11 third downs. "As far as fooling and tricking people in the NFL, it ain't going to happen," offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski said. "You've got to establish what you want to do and you've got to stick with it. You can't, every time a wave hits you, you can't start panicking. You've got to stay with what you do. "So that's what we're going to do here." Jagodzinski said part of the reason the Packers needed to stick to the plan to run was because they started two rookie guards, Jason Spitz and Tony Moll. "Especially with the two guards, we wanted to get those guys off to a fast start, and run the football," Jagodzinski said. "We had to start that way instead of having those guys on their heels in pass protection. That's the reason that we did that." The Packers had third and 1 on the first series and didn't get it; third and 3 on the second series and didn't get it; and third and 1 and fourth and 1 in the third series and didn't get them, either. "You gotta win third downs," tight end Bubba Franks said. "Third and 1s in the first quarter, didn't get none of them. One of 11? It's unheard of." "I'd love to run the ball 40 times if I could," Jagodzinski said. "You get 70 plays a game, don't you? If you could get 40 runs, you're running it pretty good, and I'd love to grind it out." The tight ends have been trying to help in that area. In some two- and three-tight end sets against the Bears, they were asked to block next to the linemen. They're also asked to play backup fullback. That might take away their ability to be weapons on offense as receivers, unless they get a check-down pass playing fullback. "We have to do what we're asked," Franks said. "Right now, I really just want to win, so, I've got to put myself on the back burner. As much as I hate it, it's not about me, it's about the team right now. We get a couple of wins, then maybe I'll say something." The scoring problem existed last year, too. Though the Packers had more first downs than their opponents, more total net yards and better time of possession, they had just 37 touchdowns and were outscored by opponents, 344-298, in building a 4-12 record. So for now, no one is saying anything except that they need to score. And win. From the Sept. 15, 2006 editions of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Belushi 9 Posted September 15, 2006 I don't think it means much. What offensive co-ordinator, other than Martz, wouldn't love to run the ball at least half the game? It likely means you are winning the game. The problem in the Packers case is that they'll be behind allot, and it's tough to keep to the running game then. I'm sure they'll emphasize the run early, but I don't think this statement changes the value of Green at all.
Restricted 0 Posted September 15, 2006 Didn't Favre only pass like 5 times in the first half of the Bears game? Green's value could be increased if they keep with this game plan and he stays healthy.

Green still got his carries, and put up 110 yards.
Dick Cheney 1 Posted September 15, 2006 I never claimed to be an offensive coordinator or anything, but if I'm down by 2-3 touchdown every game, it's not about riding a wave, it's about surviving a tsunami- pass the freaking ball!

Will return a punt 84 yards for a score? Will recover a fumbled kickoff on Green Bay's 16? Come one now.

Sounds like it had less to do with the Defense and more to do with the Special Teams...
crackshorts 0 Posted September 15, 2006 Do you guys know if V. Morency will be the back up to Green, or should I just dump his ass....
hoffdaddy 1 Posted September 15, 2006 Do you guys know if V. Morency will be the back up to Green, or should I just dump his ass.... This Sunday, no, he won't be. Within a few weeks, yes, he will be. They are not high on Noah Herron, and Davenport was cut. The other guy they were high on was Arliss Beach, and he's on the IR. Morency has a golden opportunity to seize the backup job, and contribute quite a bit on third downs. It depends on your roster as to whether he's a keep or dump. Based on Green's injuries in the last few seasons, he might be worth keeping.

hoffdaddy 1 Posted September 15, 2006 Thanks! My choice is keep him, or grab Buckhaulter, just betting on who gets injured first? Oh, that's a tough one. I've always like Buckhalter, but he's not exactly the picture of health. Then again, in the Philly offense, he's got a chance to do some nice things. Expect Westbrook to miss at least a few weeks, just like every season. As of now, I'd take Buckhalter over Morency, but that could change in a few weeks. Any way you can stash both? Got any WRs who will never see the field and are just sitting your roster? Do you have two tight ends, because you only really need one? Just a few thoughts. You see I drafted Randy McMichael, but the grabbed Colston and like him more and start him over Randy, but I fear that Yahoo might take away his TE eligibility and then it would be nice to have Randy if they do....do I dare just dump Randy? Anyway, thanks for all the great feedback...

Anyway, thanks for all the great feedback... I would not drop McMichael. And, I'm not sold on Colston. First, I expect he'll lose his TE elgibility, because he's not a tight end and won't be a tight end. Second, I have a hard time buying into him this season. He's a rookie WR, he's got McAllister, Bush, and Joe Horn on the team. How many balls will go around in New Orleans? Who are your other WRs? If you'd start any 3 of them over Colston, I'd drop Colston for the potential at RB.
