The entire ground was dug up around the cinder block walls and even underneath the basement (they supported the slab with steel girders). They then wrapped 8-mil plastic around the entire basement including underneath (imagine my basement wearing a big diaper). The only drawback is that some of the plastic peaks out of the ground where it was filled back in, and is duct taped to the sides of the house.
