hoffdaddy 1 Posted October 4, 2006 It's about friggin time. Nice draft Sherman. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=508020 Paying the penalty Big plays, infractions seal Carroll's fate By TOM SILVERSTEIN tsilverstein@journalsentinel.com Posted: Oct. 3, 2006 The lasting memory of cornerback Ahmad Carroll as a Green Bay Packer was captured Monday night. During his 34 games with the Packers, too often someone was scoring a long touchdown against him or forcing him to commit a penalty in coverage. Both things happened in a 31-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, sealing the fate of the brash, talented but too often exploited 2004 first-round pick. Time finally ran out on the 23-year-old Carroll, who entered the season without any significant ties to the head coach and general manager and played himself out of a job with his characteristically uneven play. In the end, it was the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Carroll's inability to play the deep ball that led to his release Tuesday afternoon. "He's played well," coach Mike McCarthy said. "Both defensive backs coaches feel he's gotten better on his releases. But he struggles with the ball downfield. It's been a problem for him. People will continue to challenge him until he stops it." Carroll came into the National Football League with the reputation of being tough and fast, but his lack of height and inability to track the ball led him to commit an inordinate amount of penalties and give up big plays as a starter the last two years. Teams eventually caught on to his weakness and tested him frequently, which only turned up the pressure on the Arkansas standout, who skipped his senior season to enter the NFL. Sometimes uncoachable, sometimes recalcitrant, always hard working and durable, Carroll settled down some this season after losing his starting job to veteran free agent Charles Woodson. But his play remained spotty and when on Monday night, playing as the nickel back, he gave up three completions totaling 99 yards, including a game-altering 45-yard touchdown to receiver Greg Lewis, the Packers' brass figured it was time to cut bait. Proteus71 0 Posted October 4, 2006 I can't believe he lasted this long. My guess is since he was a 1st rounder, he got more chances than he deserved to change his ways. Does this mean that Blackmon is ready?
Walter34 3 Posted October 4, 2006 old news, but congrats to all pack fans nonetheless. Maybe Chi will pick him up and make another Hillemeyer type of transition into a real player.
