thekris 0 Posted June 4, 2007 Last year was the first year I really started following it and this is my first year betting it. I'm a football guy but wanted something to keep me busy during the summer months when baseball's the only thing. I've been studying up the preview of games in the early afternoon and putting the games in on only the ones I'm comfortable with. Been getting previews from online sometimes and, as dumb as it sounds, just reading the quick little blurbs that scroll on the bottom of ESPNNEWS. Usually base my decision on W/L streaks and pitcher's records. I ignore the hitting stats because the other 8 guys in the line-up could have a terrible game. Hope that helps. And hopefully I can continue to do well. It's the least I could do to give back after having a pretty sweet college football season thanks to this site. GridIronAssassin#1 0 Posted June 5, 2007 1st off, Congrats to PB and kris for good days in baseball yesterday, Monday. Record: -10 units For today there are 4 high end favorites that I'm trying to use in combination with parlays or just bet alone. I define high end favorites as any team listed at -178 and up. Thus a high end dog using 8 cent lines is +170 and up. I found a few years ago that favorites on the upper end win considerably more than the rest( Nothing really suprising, just looking for boundaries). However, with the four games today, I'm not sure I like all the big favorites just to simply parlay them. Just kickin' around some ideas here but on a scale from 0 through 10, 10 being "really like" and 0 being "absolutely hate" and 5 being "indifferent" here are my pregame thoughts: 1. Cleveland -270 & KC +250 (KC beat Cleveland in Cleveland last 2 and Cleveland lost last 2 games to Detroit. My fear is Cleveland is not up on their game right now even though they had yesterday off. Sabathia really didn't pitch that great last outing either. But it's hard to remember when a -270 favorite last lost.) Rating =5 on Cleveland 2. Toronto -238 & Tampa Bay +220 ( Haliday seems to be back in form by shutting out Sox in last outing after being off several weeks. Toronto went through their slide and have played competently in the last few series or about a month. Overbay is out now, but Tampa Bay is starting a guy from Triple A which probably won't be able to take advantage of that fact. Tampa Bay is a long way from Toronto, so Toronto having off yesterday while Tampa Bay played in Tampa Bay might figure in to the equation as well. Rating = 8 on Toronto 3. Atlanta -220 & Florida +212 ( This is the second game of a double header, and at the time of this post I don't know who won the 1st game. I think Florida did a good job taking out Hudson yesterday by bombing him with that 4 run 5th. I anticipate Florida to win the 1st game of the double header but Atlanta to try to gain the split by winning the night cap. However, I'm not really convinced in Smoltz here. Yes, he's won alot, but he pitches smart after he's given up solid base hits. I feel Atlanta is falling down from their early season perch. Rating =4 Atlanta 4. LA Angels -201 & Minnesota +185 ( Escobar got lit up in his last outing and Baker for the Twins didn't do much better. The LA Angels bats are hot, but the Twins should be able to make some noise here too. I actually think the over might be the play here at 8.5 but not really sure.) Rating= 5 LA Angels Plays: Florida -114 , 1 unit (game 1) LOSER 4team parlay , 1 unit ( Tor/TB under 8.5 -125, Cleveland -290, Philly+1.5 -150, Red Sox -159) LOSER Texas +142, 1 unit WINNER 2team parlay, 1 unit Arizona -152 & Boston -158 LOSER

Rating= 5 LA Angels Plays: Florida -114 , 1 unit (game 1) A few random thoughts on these games, without any research whatsover... I am convinced that laying large favs is a risky way to turn a profit. I used to avoid them completely, -180 and higher. But in certain spots, playing the run line or palaying two huge favs can work out. I think it might have been last year where the large favs, including the run line, were covering almost automatically through a big chunk of the season. I was winning with favs on run lines night after night. Weird year. But bullpens get progressively worse every year, and big favs scare the sh!t out of me. Cleveland ran into good pitching and Detroit was pounding the ball the last two games. KC ran into two bad pitchers in TB before falling apart the last two games in that series. Toronto has impressed me the last two series vs Yankees and Ch Wh Sox, but I worry about their offense. TB has only two good pitchers. Inconsistent team. Figures, the game I don't take Flor as a dog....eh....Flor has been decent lately, been winning it's share of games as an underdog. Atlanta's lack of punch in the lineup is finally starting to catch up with them, as they miss Chipper Jones. It's been amazing Atlanta's success of hitting with two outs and men in RISP; but that is something that has to start regressing. Also, two key errors led to most of Florida's scroring yesterday. I am shocked how quickly Minn's offense turned cold. They were rolling going into the Oakland series on Friday, and got the win in extra innings. Since then, they have been terrible. LAA continues to roll.
thekris 0 Posted June 5, 2007 Today's picks: Padres -150 (2 units) WINNER Angels -220 (2 units) WINNER Braves Game #2 -240 LOSER Pirates -110 WINNER Good job yesterday PB. I agree about it being too risky to consistently bet with huge favs. I've been selecting a few here and there and hoping to hit like I'm dodging land mines. GIA - I too kinda like Florida to win game 1. But I'm pretty confident in Smoltz to win game 2. And for some reason I have more faith in DeLaRosa than I do Sabathia in today's game. I'm not actually basing that on anything just a hunch. Which is why I'm not touching that game either way. And I agree with PB about Tampa Bay being too inconsistent this year for me to bet for or against them against Toronto. Actually I'm kind of in the mood to take KC and TB because they're both such strong dogs. That as long as one of them hits I'll be up. But it's thinking like that caused me to start off the baseball season in the red so think I should just stay with my picks. Good luck to you guys!

Don't know why I went heavier on Phillies. Nice job yesterday PB. I always have a tough time with too many games. Went 4-3 yesterday on my games and going with quite a few today too. Florida -120 LOSER Hou/ChiSox over 9 LOSER Pit/NYY over 10 WINNER SF/Oak under 7.5 WINNER NYM/Det over 8.5 (2 units) WINNER! KC +100 LOSER Nationals +320 WINNER Padres -150 (4 units) LOSER!!!!!! I saw your picks Phillybear. I like the Cubs too but figure Atlanta's gotta get their sh!t together eventually. And I'm sure it'll be when I finally go against them. And was on the fence about Florida but decided to go with them too for a unit. Good luck everyone. Like your chances on that parlay GIA. Tough to bet against the Mets though but think Detroit will take them.
phillybear 366 Posted June 9, 2007 Tracking this game, I am amazed at how inept the Chic Wh Sox offense continues to be. At this point, give me one of those College baseball teams that ESPN is showing all day and night, clogging up their network. White Sux.
thekris 0 Posted June 9, 2007 I hear you there. A little more ChiSox offense I may have hit the over on that game. Only total I've lost so far today!
phillybear 366 Posted June 9, 2007 I hear you there. A little more ChiSox offense I may have hit the over on that game. Only total I've lost so far today! Nice job so far. Frustrating loss. CWSx tied it up in the 8th, only to lose in the 9th. FOCK. All I need is for Detroit to blow yet another lead. Oakland is about as an easy 6 unit game to can get in baseball. Focking Haren is awesome. I'm getting very drunk. Cool. Cleveland up 1-0. Cubs up 1-0. It's gonna be an interesting, drunken night. I am liable to make a drunken post or two. You've been warned.
