OTTAWA -- An Ontario government plan to offer green licence plates for energy efficient cars drew fire Friday, after provincial opposition critics learned that at least three American states are considering green plates of their own -- for sex offenders.

 

In Ohio, Wisconsin and Alabama, legislators have proposed programs to mandate green plates for convicted sex criminals.

 

Proponents say green plates make pedophiles more easily identifiable to children. But with green plates set to debut in Canada as early as next summer, critics worry that Ontario's eco-motorists might be targeted stateside.

 

NDP MPP Peter Kormos called the program "downright dangerous."

 

"Just imagine," he said. "People in Ohio think green plates mean pedophile. Meanwhile, you're driving with your three kids in the back seat."

 

Many worried that frightened parents might resort to vigilante justice.

 

"It would be awful to have an Ontario citizen who's trying to save the planet driving through Ohio wondering why everyone is yelling at them," said PC MPP Tim Hudak.

Why don't we just permanently tatoo people green or yellow or orange whenever they are convicted of a crime?

 

The license plate thing is just dumb. Are drunk drivers only dangerous for the 2 years while they have their orange plates, or afterwards?

All the guys I know with party plates just drove their girlfriend/wives car anyway....
