KEEPER League Controversy

Recommended Posts

I'm in a 10 team keeper league that has been around for a few years. This year, two other teams want to join but a few guys in the league aren't happy about it and their is some argument about how to add them to the league/draft.

Each team can keep up to three players but you have to use the round they were original drafted in to keep them.

What do you guys think is the best way to add them to the league without messing up the draft for the old owners but not making it completely unfair for the new guys. Anyone done something that worked well in the past?

yup, give them an expansion draft or dont add new teams. Its the only fair way to the new owners. Imagine playing in a league where you wont have any shot at winning for probably 3 or 4 years. Thats why expansion draft is the only fair choice. That way they can at least get some home for the future by getting Peterson or Johnson etc.

Let the 2 owners do an expansion draft of 3 players each before the big draft?

That's how we did it a few years back. It had mixed results.

Expansion Team #1 did nothing but b!tch about it the whole year, resulting in the league booting him out after the season was done (and with another owner deciding to hang it up for completely unrelated reasons, we went back to being a 10 teamer)

Expansion Team #2 won his division and made the playoffs before losing in the semifinals. He's still around, and a good owner.

I think it prolly depends on the quality of the owners you're bringing in, and whats available.

What do you guys mean by expansion draft? The two new teams each pick three from the remaining non-keepers and rookies before the draft starts? Then the draft starts like normal with all the leftovers?

This is what we did when we went from 8 to 10 teams. Ours is a full starting roster keeper league. Each team carries over 1QB, 2RB, 3WR/TE, 1 D, 1 K each year.

Anyway, we allowed all current owners to "protect" 3 players on their team. The two new teams had their own draft and got to fill their rosters from those that we did not protect. This allowed them to get some quality players.

At that point, we were all able to go into the regular draft with full rosters. I then gave the two expansion teams picks 1.01 and 1.02 (they flipped for it). One team did pretty good, one not so good. They are both still in the league and both are doing alright.
