Saturday update #1:

- Is this a fatal blow for the Orange? Syracuse coughs up the lead with 10 seconds left and the ball and drops a huge home game to Pitt. The Panthers are perhaps only a step away now, but Syracuse is on life support.

- West Virginia can't get it done at UConn setting up a huge game with Pitt. At 2-7 vs the top 50, WVU really needs to get to 11 Big East wins.

- BAD loss for Kent St at Bowling Green. The Flashes already had 2 losses to teams in the bottom third of division 1, now they drop a game to 196th Bowling Green. This makes the final two games (Miami-OH, @Akron) must win (plus a run to at LEAST the MAC semis).

- Oklahoma makes a huge statement by crushing A&M by 27. This brings both teams to 7-7 in the Big XII, though OU has a significantly greater non-conference profile. The Aggies go from scoring 98 and beating Tech by 54, to scoring 37 in a 27 point loss today. With a season-ending home date with Kansas, the Aggies might be in a must-win game at Baylor on Wednesday. The Sooners can seal a bid by closing out against OSU and Missouri.

- Georgia Tech lays Wake Forest's at-large hopes to rest, fending off a late Wake rally to win in OT. Miami survives a scare at home from Virginia, and the ACC bubble is narrowed to 4: Clemson, Miami, Maryland, and Virginia Tech.

- Baylor picks up an important home win over Missouri. The Bears pull a game ahead of the 3-team pack at .500 in the conference and will have a shot to finish 3rd in the Big XII, which would be a huge boost for their profile.

- The Big Ten now seems certain to be a 4-bid league, barring a surprise winner in the conference tournament as Ohio St continues its freefall. With Florida's drop in the RPI, the Buckeyes are now 0-10 against the RPI top 50.

- Speaking of Florida, the Gators take a big hit with a home loss to Mississippi St. Combined with Arkansas' big win over Vanderbilt, the Gators are now firmly planted as the #5 team in the SEC. Will the conference get that many bids? Florida is now 1-6 against the top 50, and their non-conference SOS (over 280th) remains an albatross around their neck. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, are probably 1 win from lock status, be it against Vandy or LSU, or in the SEC tourney.

- Texas Tech is back on the outer edges of the at-large radar with their upset of Texas. If they want to stay in the conversation, though, they need to follow it up with a win at Kansas.

Saturday night update:

- Arizona St with a convincing win over USC. The win pulls them back to .500 in conference and makes them 5-6 against the top 50. Their non-conference SOS is still an appalling 307th, so sweeping a road trip to Oregon would be a good idea. USC splits their pair in Arizona but still looks good to get a bid so long as they avoid a losing streak to close out the season.

- Washington erases any remaining doubt anyone may have had regarding Cal's at-large chances with a win in Berkeley.

- Houston's slim chances may be extinguished after a disastrous loss to 10-win East Carolina. Zero top-100 wins, and now a likely 3rd place finish in the C-USA should end things.

- On a related note, the first automatic bid of the year goes to Cornell out of the Ivy.

- Gonzaga defends their home court and all but clinches the WCC regular season title in their tilt with St Mary's. While both teams are still safely in, the Zags gain an important chip should anything happen in the conference semis (top 2 seeds get byes into semifinals).

- Stephen F Austin upset at home, eliminating the Lumberjacks from at-large consideration.

- Illinois St knocks off Southern Illinois on the road to clinch 2nd place in the MVC. The win, their 4th in a row, also improves their record vs the top 50 to 4-4. Still, the Redbirds would be wise to make the MVC finals just to shore up their resume.

- Kansas St's skid reaches 4 games and they are firmly on the bubble once again. Despite a few resume weaknesses, the Wildcats should be fine as long as they win their last two (conference doormats Colorado and Iowa St) and tack on one more in the Big XII tournament. A slip up in any of the three could have them sweating come Selection Sunday.

Sunday update:

Who wants to win an at-large bid? At the moment, the answer would seem to be 'no one', as once again, all active bubble teams have lost this afternoon. It is looking more and more likely that the last few at-large bids will be decided during Championship Week, as a host of underwhelming power conference teams will meet head-to-head, about the only way any of them can get a win these days.

- Heartbreaking loss for Kentucky at Tennessee. If the Wildcats can somehow get this type of performance on a regular basis without Patterson, they still have a chance at a bid. Their remaining games are winnable (@South Carolina, Florida), and 12 wins plus a win in the SEC tourney could be enough.

- Arizona drops another home game and falls to 7-9 in the Pac-10. The Cats are 5-7 in their last 12 and have lost 6 of their last 8. The SOS (1st) helps alot, as does a soft bubble, but an 8-10 record might be too much to overcome, making their road trip to the Oregon schools all the more important.

- Villanova drops to 7-9 in the Big East, and 4-8 in their last 12. Their remaining two games (South Florida, @Providence) are must win, along with at least 1 game in the Big East tournament. Their best non-conference wins (George Mason and @ Temple) came against teams unlikely to make the field of 65, and a 161st non-conference SOS doesn't help their case.

--- Just when Oklahoma seemed to be taking charge of the 3rd Big XII bid, Blake Griffin goes down. He will miss at least the final two regular season games, and possibly the Big XII tournament. If he appears unlikely to make the NCAA Tournament, this could adversely effect OU's seed or keep them out altogether.

- St Joseph's with a disastrous home loss to Temple. The Hawks blow a double-digit lead and lose a chance to claim 2nd-place in the A-10 alone, one of the few advantages they had over the other A-10 bubble teams. The Hawks absolutely must win at least one of their final two; at home against a Xavier team that is working on an 11-game win streak, and at desperate Dayton. Lose both, and St Joe's will be forced to win the A-10 tournament to go dancing.

At this point there is not one legitimate reason for Arizona to be in the tourney. Other than two wins over WSU, they have done something between jack and shiot. THey are living off their SOS, but if they can't beat any legitimate teams then why are they deserving? Must be the Jim Harrick rule when he got his crapass Georgia Bulldog team in the tourney.

Sadly, at least 3 or 4 teams are making the field this year without a legitimate reason to be there. Yet, there are still idiots out there who argue the NCAA Tournament field needs to be expanded. :overhead:

Time to start cheering on the mid-majors to steal some bids.

The weekend couldn't have ended more fittingly. Maryland blows a 20 pt lead at home with 11 minutes left in the second half to Clemson. The Tigers are officially a lock, Maryland drops to the bottom of the ACC picture.

Arizona competes against #4 UCLA but can't get a win, but one more win and punch that ticket ... for a new record to beat the old record.

24 years in a row baby!

And counting.

The weekend couldn't have ended more fittingly. Maryland blows a 20 pt lead at home with 11 minutes left in the second half to Clemson. The Tigers are officially a lock, Maryland drops to the bottom of the ACC picture.

What a fun game to watch. I've seen quite a few Clemson games this year, and I am still usure as to why they are not better than their record. I am really impressed with them and think they should be a top 10 team. They have a couple beasts inside and great guard play. It always seems this team either plays up to the competion or down to the competition. I think they could be a big sleeper in the tourney to go very far if they can find some consistency. They have the talent to beat anyone in the country.

And the most undeserving team at this point since Jim Harricks Georgia Bulldogs got in with as crappy a record as Arizona. Who gives a damn if a team competes? They should have won at home and didn't. They don't deserve a bid. I'll just take pleasure in watching them get destroyed in the first round again.

Monday update:

- Big win for the Mountaineers over Pitt. With the way the field is working out, WVU is probably a safe bet now, but they should take care of business against St John's and add one tournament win just to be sure.

- As quickly as Texas Tech moved back into discussion, they move right back out. Has their ever been a more unusual week? Losing by 54 to A&M, knocking off Big XII leading Texas, then losing by 58 to KU.
