Why are people killing Kellen Clemen's career already?

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit perplexed as to why Kellen Clemens is basically written off as a viable NFL starter after less than a full season of playing. The guy was a second rounder only because he got hurt, he was projected in the first round. He's had less than a full season as a starter and while he was terrible, so were many other QBs in the same situations.

Let's take a look at some comparison numbers of QBs in their first season starting 10 or more games:

Com Att pct yds avg TD Long INT Rat

130 250 52.0 1529 6.1 5 56 10 60.9

095 197 48.2 1043 5.3 6 52 9 55.4

155 293 52.9 1749 6.0 9 75 18 55.7

115 237 48.5 1732 5.5 8 75 13 61.4

195 363 53.7 2282 4.4 8 46 13 65.5

205 356 57.6 2108 5.9 11 68 15 67.5

The top one is Clemens, and it's ugly. Now let's reveal who the others are

Eli Manning

Troy Aikman

Dan Fouts

Steve Young

Drew Brees - This was actually his 3rd year.

I'm not saying Clemens can or will be anything close to any of those QBs, but it does go to show you that you simply can't write him off yet just because he's started slow. Yet all I hear are people saying the Jets should cut him because he's garbage and that he hasn't proven anything by now so he never will. I guess Flacco, Ryan and Rivers have spoiled us? Did we forget that QBs sometimes need time to grow and develop?

As a Jet fan i'm comfortable with Clemens starting this year and I hope the Jets only bring in a QB that will serve as an insurance policy, and not another aging vet to be another placeholder.
