YO, Bill E.

Recommended Posts

I was on the way back to the house today listening to a Dallas radio station. They were talking about an exhibit at a museum (didn't catch the name) of a complete megalodon jaw. Said it was about 11' when opened. They are auctioning it off. I don't remember if they said $60k+ or $600k.

Either way. Holy sh@t!

Bill E would rather make 2000 people happily toofed than sell a million dollar jaw to MikeFF

Well I like E's posts, his pictures, and his stories. I also like GH's new collection of Megateeth. One day, I too hope to own a megladon tooth - a 6 incher.

containing 182 first-class fossil teeth, each with superb enamel coverage, coloring, serrations, and measuring up to 7 5/8 inches along the diagonal, amongst the largest Megalodon teeth ever discovered.

Whilst the teeth of the Megalodon have been found on continents across the world, the finest examples are found along the coastal plains of the Mid-Atlantic States. The majority of the specimens here were personally collected by the late Vito Bertucci in the rivers of South Carolina; esteemed for his dedication and success in seeking out the finest Meg teeth. It took him over sixteen years to recover enough specimens of the appropriate size and shape to complete this collection, the largest jaw set in the world, measuring 11 feet across and 8¾ feet high. Positioned with scrupulous scientific accuracy in a pair of jaws modeled in resin and scaled up from a Great White jaw set, the teeth are accurately arrayed in four rows; each row at a different angle for maximum efficiency in rending the flesh of the great fish's victims. The jaws contain four teeth that each measure over 7 inches along the diagonal, although this is not immediately obvious because part of the roots are embedded in the jaw

Bill - how many high quality teeth would you say you have recovered and are in your possession?

Since the jaw and vertebrae were cartilage not bone they did not fossilize. some people build jaws from a fiberglass material and fill them in with either replica or real teeth. Each tooth in a shark's mouth has a unique shape. Then each tooth that you find has a different color and size. Trying to find the teeth that you need to make a row of teeth that are the right size, shape and color would drive you nuts. People that do it sift through thousands of teeth before finding the right ones.

I did not see the photos of gettinhuge's collection. Do you have a link to the post?

Thanks for the complements Joc. The best I can figure is that I sell about 100 or so teeth a month. It more than doubles around Christmas. So I might sell about 1300 per year and have been selling them for 11 years. The first few years I sold a lot less than I do now so a rough guess is that I have sold 10,000 teeth and have four or five hundred Megalodon teeth in inventory. I could be way off though.

ETA The 7-5/8" number is off. 99% of the teeth are under 6". I have never found a true 7" tooth. Two are over 6.9" and I have only seen two un-restored 7" teeth. I never even heard of one over 7.5". Though they might exist they would only be one or two. That is like saying "Humans grow to 8' tall. While it may be true in extreme cases it is almost unheard of.

when I read this... and measuring up to 7 5/8 inches along the diagonal...I was thinking this goes against everything I've read, and what you've posted. I've seen these teeth advertised on tv or whatever for ~$100 per inch. 4-6 inchers were great finds. I don't think 7 and 5/8 inch has ever popped up unitl this post. I had my doubts about the link from RP. But some sucker somewhere might pay the asking price.

I like your personal link. Not that I delve into the Megateeth conversation very often...but when I do come across it - you are my gold standard
