seh2000 5 Posted August 17, 2011 Mike, I've used the product for many years and it's helped me win for sure! However, every year, I've thought about the projection pal, but never had the nerve to use it. So can you or someone sell me on it? Sure I know the fftoday projections are good, but I do disagree with some projections in many situations. So that being said, is importing other sites projections an option many users do, or do most just go with your projections? If it is used, does the ADP take into account all of the sites imported or is it only the projection stats. Just looking for something quick to do that may give a good view into a compliation of projections. Also, what do most do about the weighting? 50% on last 8 games of last year and 50-% on projections...just looking for some proven methods. Any insight from anyone would be great. (There probably is already a thread on this, but haven't been able to search...). thanks. seh2000
Mike MacGregor 20 Posted August 17, 2011 I'm not sure I'm the best person to "sell" you on Pal. I try to be straight with you guys, and the straight up answer is, I don't use Pal myself. The reason I make it available and the whole ability to import other projections is in the CC/DB, is because it has always been there (from way, way back before I teamed up with FF Today) and I know people like it. So it stays. From my perspective though, I just use the FF Today projections. Do I agree with all of the projections and take them cart blanche? No, not at all. I consider what I would consider outliers from what I'm already thinking, and then either come around to agreeing with that perspective/projections, or I adjust accordingly - simple adjustments like editing the projections for a particular player, or adjusting the rankings post-Compile Cheatsheets. Now, I do think the addition of the custom fields a few years ago, and the ability to import any data a person wants into the Compiler via Pal, like kick and punt return stats, is pretty cool. I'm not sure any other programs offer that ability. In terms of Pal on its own though, it is not the easiest thing to use. I'm sure people will vouch for that. People need to understand though, that I'm not doing that on purpose. Because of the vast number of ways data can be presented on the web, the program is going to be inherently a little difficult and you'll probably need some manual steps to clean the data so it can feed into the CC/DB. I've made it as easy to use as possible. Some guys get it, some don't, and that is okay. I'm not sure which camp you are going to fall into. I just want to point out that it isn't for everybody. The ADP is not really related to Pal and importing projections. The ADP is simply data that feeds into the cheatsheets along side of the projected fantasy points and rankings, so you get a convenient place to see where players are normally drafted. The weighted average of projections - FF Today's and others you've imported - plus past stats really gives you complete control over how you want the CC/DB to tabulate the projected fantasy points for all players. It truly is a custom system. For me though, I think you want more projections impact, and less past stats, as long as you trust the projections. Those will identify more breakout candidates and account for off-season changes and recent news more than prior year stats will. seh, check out this link with the pre-loaded Projection Pal files I just uploaded the other night: http://www.fftodayforums.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=386100 Try the CBS one. You can use it to easily import the CBS projections, since I've done the leg work for you guys there, and then you can review their projections and see if overall they are more in line with your thinking. Of course, if you've had success in the past just using the FF Today projections, you may ultimately want to stay with those and spend more time reading our articles and doing other research. Just trying to lay out the options for you. All the best with whatever you decide.
FlaHawker 24 Posted August 17, 2011 seh, I think Mike made a great case for why people use (or don't use)PAL. The most imporant point he made was to use it if "you trust the projections" you are importing. Don't use it just to say you've used it. I use PAL and import projections from two other sites I trust. For me, combining thw two other sites with FFT gives each player a pretty well-rounded projection for the upcoming year. For me, it's all about balance. But again, make sure you are projecting stats that you trust! I never use past projections when weighting my projections. I do, however, equally weight the two sites I have imported plus FFT because I trust all three sites equally. As Mike also said, PAL is not easy to use, but once you figure it out, it is cake. Side note, only import stats right before you draft, espeically if you import from sites that update the projections throughout preseason.
