Belated Friday Night Poker thread

Recommended Posts

So, I've decided to quit playing cash games, again, but I still needed like 7 hours to qualify for a $15k tournament, so I go in Friday, after a week off. One Friday, earlier this month, I posted my worst loss in years. $540.

So, I go in there with about $350 and I buy in a 1/2 game for my usual $120. The first, kinda decent pot I won was I had KQ on a K high flop. Called the pfr who cbets the flop, could be AK, so I just call the $15. Turn is a blank. He checks, so I check. River is a queen, he checks and I bet $15 and he snap calls and turns over AK. "Oh, I DID suck out, wow." and the guy gets all flustered. "Blah, 3 outer, blah." Dude played it bad, let me get there.

So, between me and angry guy is my favorite kind of player. She bets a lot, but she is bad. She is driven by ego, and trys to match the macho. She's aggressive, not afraid to bluff, but just bad. She wins a lot of small pots, but loses the big ones. I know what she's up to right away, and she actually had a lot of chips before I got there. One hand I had A,10 off and I flopped top/top with a 10 high flop. Check, bet, call. J came on the turn goes check, check, and then a 2 comes on the river. She bets $25. I snap called, and before I could show my second pair, she says "Nice call." I just said "Thanks." but I was thinking, "You think I'm some kinda chump lady? You better watch out, or I will take all your chips."

So, I had ran my $120 up to about $300 in the first hour, when this hand happened:

Couple limpers, comes to me in the BB with 8,3 off in the SB. 2nd worst hand in poker, but I am getting like 8-1 pot odds, only a buck for me to call, if the BB doesn't raise, and the BB is meek, so, I throw in the buck and the flop comes 3,8,10 with 2 spades. Great flop, but there are some draws I want to get out, and I even want A,10 to get out, or overpairs like KK. Too many ppl in the hand, so I bet $12. More than the pot. Angry dude re-raises me to 30 and aggressive bad lady calls. Now, I pretty much put them on 2 hands very similar to that, or maybe aggressive lady has a flush draw, but angry dude wouldn't re-raise me on a draw, and bad lady would be re-raising a set. After the bet/call, he has like 60 behind and she has 200ish. I re-raise to $100 and angrey guy starts flipping out again, and tanks. I eventually say to him, "If you've got aces, lay them down. I got aces beat." and finally, he knows he's getting it in bad, says, "I gotta suck out, one time." and calls. bad lady, also calls. So the turn comes some brick, like the 4h and I insta shove in $200 to make sure I have bad lady covered. She calls. River is another brick. I shrug and say, "I have 2 pair." and angry guy goes balistic, throwing his pocket queens, THAT HE LIMPED IN WITH, face up on the table. I show my hand, bad lady mucks, and pulls out more cash. I scoop the massive pot.

So, I won a few hands after that. One where I rebluffed bad lady. She made a strange turn bet, which I raised, then she flatted, and checked the river ... like a green light to steal, I bet $50 with my J high, and she folded.

So, in the end, that $540 loss a couple weeks ago, erased. I ended up cashing out up $565.

Oh, and then I just told my Mom everything about the win and where my bankroll is at. Got birthday money and work money, that helped. Only reason I have any money besids that, is because of poker. She says, "Time for you to start paying rent." today.

Jeesus, I already cover all the expenses, electricity and heat, I just told you I am quitting poker, you know i have no income ... and you don't need it. I realize, on pricncipal I should pay rent, and I love you guys, and I love this ranch ... but how am I gonna pay rent? We agree that I donate 1 day a week to working for her in the business to cover it. Right away, she starts with all these ideas that A) are not good for my back, and 2) don't translate to any actual gains for the business, stuff like cleaning.

Then I said, "And if you want to have houseguests, they stay with you. I am a tenant, and I have rights. You can't just walk in here whenever you want, either. 24 hours notice." and she was laughing, "I'm serious. That's the law."

It's a complex situation. She wants me to stay, but become some vegan and start doing yoga every morning, and step dad wants me to leave. He wont say it, cause happy wife, happy life, right? But he ... for whaever reason, wants both houses, come in here and clean and shiat, whatever. Says he would perhaps like a "reading room" wtf ... he can read all he wants next door. He is retired, and I leave him alone all day. Anyway, I agreed to start paying rent. Might as well move out, get my own place, at this point. BUT ... That's exactly what my step-dad wants. So what I do, is after I quit playing poker, I spend my bankroll fixing up my car. Then I am broke and there's nothing to extract, moving out becomes unrealistic. Oh, and the cat she bought me, 19 years ago is still alive and happy. I gotta at least stay until the cat dies.

Then hopefully, before this summer is over, I can sell my car, or pack it up and gtfo of Arizona. Again. Electric bills alone in the summer are like $300 a month. If I move out, either all the plants in the house die, or get moved out, and stuff like candles will melt, it gets focking hot in the summer. It's a savings for them for me to stay here and cover that cost. AND, if the goal is for me to move out, and oh man, I do wanna move out, wouldn't it make sense to NOT drain me of my savings? Ya know, if they needed the money, and they didn't do stupid shiat like spend $5000 on a fountain, I would have no problem doing everything I can to help them financially, but they are idiots about their money, and that's OK, it's their money and if they want to be frivolous, that is fine. BUT, let me hang onto what little I have, so that maybe I can make a plan to have my own place again. I would prefer that, living in some shiatty little place, than living here, on this beautiful ranch with my family, just to be on my own. And if that was the case, I would not be here in this town, either, working for her for $11 an hour. She doesn't want that. She wants me to stay. There's so much passive aggressive shiat in play, my step dad is stressed out, and it's not mostly about me, but I am an easy target. So, I agreed. 6 hours every Wednesday. $265 a month rent. Deal. Now gtfo of my house.

But I digress. There's more poker stories to tell.

One hand, I flopped a set of sixes and felted some kid, and then like 15 minutes later I have J9 on a 78J rainbow flop, we get it all in this time HE flopped a set, and I didn't hit a 10, or running J9. He was a good player, but it was funny how easy I got him with set against top pair, and then, he rebuys, has more chips and wins it right back, and then some.

Oh, and then there was this unknown guy, who was your standard fish, but he looked tough. One hand, I get AQ utg and I raise it to $10. Fock position, I got a good hand. Comes around to this tough guy fish, and I can tell, he's short stacked, his body language, hand tells, he is ready to go all in, with just about anything. Fold equity in a cash game, prolly something he doesn't understand. How often am I 5xing it light from UTG? Never. So, he shoves for like $45 total, folds to me,mand I call. He has K6 off. Needless to say, he hits trips, K on the flop, K on the river, and I say to the guy, "You shoved with that?" and he was all, "What's wrong with that?" and I couldn't help myself, "Because my entire range is ahead of you. And I did have the better hand." as I mucked. "Thanks for the lesson." He said, in a snide way.

So then, some of the chips I had won off angry guy, had now been transfered to the fish. Then angry guy picks up aces and makes a proper raise, maybe still too small to 15 and the fish, who still has less than $100, calls and then flops 2 pair on the guy again. Flop is 10,J, x and angry shoves with AA and gets called by 10, J ... you could see the steam comin outta his ears. Turn is a king. Fish is smiling and the river, ironically,,when he hit two kings against my AQ, is another king. Angry guy, I think it still hasn't registered that he won, I slap the table in his direction and say loudly, "Nice hand!" and the fish leaves. Muttering the word "a-hole" under his breath.

Funny how that works though. Angry lost chips to me with AK against my KQ and then QQ against 8,3 and then the fish sucked out on me,,with K6 against AQ and then, original angry guy got some of his money back, BUT ... Had to suck out, with AA against 2 pair.

A couple minuts later, while I was bluffing the bad lady, he is saying, "I wasn't mad at you." "it's OK, we all been there." and then he said, "I am mad at myself. I should have raised preflop and you never see the flop." and I was just like, "Yep. It's just a dollar for me to see a flop there in the small blind. And also, when I tell you pocket aces are no good, 100% of the time that is truth. That is not an angle when it comes from me." "I know." He said ... But that guy fears me. That's one guy, when he sees me sit down at his table, I can visibly see him go like,,"Oh shiat .... This guy again." and he is good for the game. I like him. Was trying to be nice.

Oh yeah, there's more. I know, hard to believe,,this all happened in like 4 hours. So, I cash out, walk up to the empty 3x hold em game where, if I am in my lucky seat, I think I have an advantage against the house. I know I have an advantage against some dealers. So, I sit down and I am running good. I wanted to get to an even $600 on the night, and pretty quickly I was at like $650 profit on the night. By myself at the 3x table, then guess who, sits down? Tough guy fish. "Got tired of poker, huh?" ... "yeah" he kinda mutters and then he realizes it's me, and now it's us against the house. Now I get to say, "Nice!" every time he wins and "too bad" every time he loses, because he's not playing against me.

Table filled up around me, 2 more players coming in, one was this black guy that was letting me see his hole cards. Sloppy dealer, was a perfect set up, and then I just ran bad. Like there was one hand, clear as day, I knew the 5 of hearts was one of the community cards. I look down at KJ of spades. Am I gonna fold that now? No. The information doesn't help me. But the dealer had an ace and I lost.

It was all good, I was rolled for it and everything, just didn't feel like it and cashed out of that game up only $5, after tips.

One time, Friday night, too, this sweet little old Asian lady who I have known and played with for years, I rivered a boat and checked to her. She checked it back, with her trip aces. I know she will call $50 bet there, but I don't want to squeeze the sweet little old Asian lady for 50 dolla. Right? Is that who I have become? No. I checked to her, and she checked back.

Now, on the other hand, taking money from the casino ... I have no problem with.

You know what is really sexy? Black, $100 casino chips. I have a chip collection and really would love to keep one, but first, it is not a poker chip, it is a casino floor chip, and second, it's worth $100.

Ya know, in the poker room, you have a nice win and you hafta rack up like two racks of $5 chips if you have less than $1000 total ... so nice at the floor games, oh, let me "color you up" here's a handfull of chips worth $1000. Just the look and feel of those $100 black chips. I like it. More than a blue striped hundo.

A 19 y.o. cat?

At least 18 going on 19. Maybe 19 going on 20. She has a schedule. i wake up, take a shiat and a shower, then I return to the bed to rub her belly, which is her favorite thing. She has a neverending bowl of dry cat food and another for fresh water, but mostly she eats whatever I eat. She ate some tangerine the other day. One of her favorite things is yogurt, Activia. She gets a taste of everything. On my birthday we had crab legs and I brought her some. She loves crab meat and ice cream.

Old Mouser. Was with me in NY, in NJ, in Phoenix, Seattle, now Tucson ... we think she is older than 19. Had an incredibly pampered life. i remember, wish I had taken a picture ... came home to New Jersey after 9/11, walked in and she was right in the window ... Like a normal day, wondering why I was late ... with ground zero smoking in the distance. She brought me back to some peace, in that moment.

She's old, for sure, but still happy. I have protected her and taken care of her for a long time. Gonna be sad when she goes. I got a spot picked out where she will be, forever. I hope it's a quick thing. If she gets sick, I am pretty much gonna put her down right away.

Oh yeah, after lunch, about 2 PM ... once she has had some special treats, like today it was Chicken Tika Masala, like at least a half hour, under the covers nap time, she wants that every day lately. She also is kinda dirty now that she's old. She slobbers. Sometimes I wipe her chin area down with a warm washcloth, and she hates it, but ... she needs it, and once she is dry, she is happy.

She's still "there", she's always been smart. Very sweet, old girl. Can't imagine she will live through the summer, but she does like warm weather.

Are you going to put her down yourself or pay a vet? I'd probably just drown her in the pond.

I would totally do that, return her to nature, but I don't think koi fish eat dead cats.

There's a spot, little spot on this land where the wind comes by the fence, near where we still hang our clothes ona line to dry.

She doesn't seem to have the energy to get over to that spot anymore, but that's where I will burry her.

I am hoping, she just goes. But if she gets sick,,and it's clearly the end, I will have the vet put her down.

On the bright side Imhave determined that my pond is just the right size for 2 koi. It's almost spring in Arizona, fish are out and hungry again. i still think flash has vision problems. food or not, when I come around the pond he goes gulping at the surface. Crush, on the other hand I can see, she can visualy ID food and snag it. Slurp! They like dry catfood pellets.

Crush, was one of the very first group, and kind of a runt. Plan color so saved from being kulled. Flash, was also tiny ... 1 inch when I got each of them.

They are both nice big fat happy 10 inch fish. I think, for my pond, that really is the max for koi, 2, large adult koi. One is OG Japanese strain,,the other is a butterfly. If I get babies ... Might need a bigger pond.

Also I still hate the limp in the small blind with 8-3. After the rake, you're only getting what? 3:1 expressed. You need to make at least 20 on the pot if you win it.

There's a story behind that, of course. Long Story short, I folded 7,2 off from the sb and woulda made quad sevens one time. I never fold for a dollar in that spot anymore. Bad play? Debatable. When it pays off, it pays off.

I made over $300 on that hand.

It's not debatable. It's a bad play.

People aren't even sure completing A 10 off is profitable from the small blind.

Save the $1 from the small blind with your crappy hands.

You have the worst position on the table. The faster you fold, the faster you get to play the button.

It is debatable. You just don't understand the larger dynamics at the table. Fold A, 10 getting 9-1 pot odds, are you crazy? Where do you get this hogwash from?

That's a raise.

If I made $300 that one hand, I can be wrong and fold on the flop another 299 times before it becomes - ev. Any hand can flop quads. Same odds with 7,2 as Big Slick.

You know whats a bad idea, limping in with QQ from mp.

That's a really bad idea too - especially since he couldn't lay them down. That's the golden rule when you do some cute sh!t like that. Be able to lay it down. If you can't don't do it.

The problem with the prospect of limping the next 299 hands is that it doesn't account for money you'd lose when people flop sets, people flop better two pair, your small two pair get counterfeited, the flop comes 8 high and you are out kicked, the times where you flop trips and you're out kicked, etc. I know you know about reverse implied odds.

You said it yourself. You basically had a dream flop and tried to blow everyone out of the pot. Your instincts are telling you that even with one of the best flops possible, you aren't in that great of shape.
