Defenseless player rule in the NFL.

Recommended Posts

Pittman got smoked. Clean shoulder hit other than the fact it breaks 1 rule. You can't hit a defenseless player. DB got suspended for the remainder of the year.

What are DBs supposed to do? In the rule it says they should avoid the hit. Should the DB recognize it's a defenseless hit and let the player catch the ball and run for a TD?

Reactions to that hit caused guys like Tom Brady, Jim Miller, and others say that it should be a fine on the QB who threw the ball into that coverage because the QB didn't know how to tell if it's zone or man coverage and the defense it hamstrung on how to deal with it.

Those are ex QBs saying it.

Here's the hit.

And here's a comment from another guy Rich Eisen about it. He outlines the rule as well.

Crazy.

You never want to see guys get hurt but some of these calls are horrendous. You can't look at Mahomes wrong without getting a 15 yard penalty.

Dude is suspended without pay for the season. Even if somehow Pitt goes to the playoffs.
