Worst feeling in the world at work... the prolonged Teams ellipses

Recommended Posts

Monday morning.  Sitting down and settling in.  Teams message asking if I'm there from one of our more mentally challenged employees.  Then we do the usually NPC exchange of nothingness.

And then ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...  ... ...

Then it's just the old ellipses for 20 minutes, while this guy writes war and peace for some problem I assume is going to break the world.

Yep.  A 1000 word essay explaining some problem an intern would know how to solve.

My kittens often send messages like this, when they stand on my keyboard.

Yeah, he's worried about configuring some dip switches on some PCIe board (who uses PCI anymore, amiright?)

And I'm alls like, "Yeah, man.  That's probably in the manual."

This guys responds with, "ok, well let me know if you have any extra bandwidth this week to help us with this"

MFer, you need help looking at a manual for dip switch settings?

This is why I don't get concerned when people get laid off.  At least 25% of the work force is absolutely helpless anyway.

I have a few people like that on my team.  We use slack so when I see "xxxx xxxxx is typing..."  I know to do something else instead of wait.  And usually he solves his own problems by just talking it out.  If not I walk him through his problems.  Part of the job.
