You guys are human centipeding too much.

Prices went up and illegals grew in number.

Private equity has taken over the roofing industry. They jacked up prices and are extracting as much profit as they can in a short period of time. They dont care about long term quality because they dont plan on being the owners in 10 years.

So instead of high quality long term labor they hire somebody to get the work done for them. That may be the actual company that does the work. Or it may be a general that hires a sub. That may even hire a sub. That sub will usually be illegal labor or at least part illegal.

Each of those is a layer that eliminates the connection to wages as a factor to bidding. Those layers also insulate the PE group from any connection to the illegals.

The exclusive deals for certain products also play in here too, but obviously I am dealing with sandbags with legs with you two so I am not even going to bother trying to explain that.

Jobs for PE groups are no longer bid with any kind of labor cost effect because they are way above where it matters. That is why a house right now can get such a variance for estimates for roofing.

It can be 16k all the way up to 65k for practically the same roof and it could even be the same actual laborers that would do the work depending on how many roofers are in the area. And the PE group isnt even mad when they get underbid like this. It just gives them a new target to buy and eliminate from the marketplace.

The whole thing is nuts.

The illegals dont necessarily cause the price inflation, but without them the whole model doesnt really work. Take them away and the PE groups dont have the ability to complete the jobs.

Ok for real this time since you actually admitted it, thanks for confirming that roofing price increases aren’t because of increases in illegal labor!

Also, with your last paragraph, are you saying that there would not be enough roofing labor if not for illegals?  That’s another interesting admission.  It also seems to be backtracking a bit from your prior claim of “massive increases” in illegal labor, and now just focusing on the fact that illegal labor exists in general, even though I’m sure it’s been that way for awhile.

What you're describing is a PE problem, not an illegal problem.  Without the illegals, the roofing costs would be even more.  PEs would still invest in an industry where they can make money.  Roofing isn't attractive for PEs because of illegals, it's attractive because everyone needs roofs and the early 2000s housing boom presents a large market where those shingles are aging out.  You obviously know about roofing so you should know how hard it is to find labor.  Stop acting like there are armies of illegals laying shingles for $5/hr while American roofers sit unemployed.

Give up bruh.

Thanks again for confirming illegals have always been roofers.  Do you have any evidence that the % of roofers being illegal has massively increased in recent years?

They absolutely would and they did.  The proof of this is the fact that there has been a labor shortage in the roofing industry for years now.

It might have, but not at the expense of American workers, it's due to the labor shortage and roofers will hire anyone they can.

Mexicans will do anything. It doesn't mean they know what they're doing. These are unskilled laborers for the most part. They just want your American dollar.

That's why GCs and Contractors pay them slave labor type wages, they can. No insurance, no 401K, no taxes, etc.

If you believe otherwise then you're an idiot.

He did confirm it.  He admitted illegals aren’t the reason for the increased prices.
