We used to have an assault weapons ban, we clearly need another one. I'm pretty sure we've had this debate several times here, but it keeps happening.

You can't even tell us what a f****** assault rifle is, but yet here you are trying to grab as many virtues as you can. And when called out on it, all we get is but but but but but distractions... Tell me , you f****** jackass, what constitutional right in the Bill of Rights would you like to give up? Pick one other than the second. If you're going to make people give up a constitutional right, then you ought to get one taken away from you. I pick the first amendment for you, cuz no one wants to hear the inane s*** that comes out of your mouth on a daily basis in here. The less anyone hears you, the better off the world will be.

The bottom line is every few months when this happens, it's always the same lines, police were defunded, guns don't kill people, probably a tranny, mentally ill, FBI busy with school boards yadda yadda... But the obvious answer is this doesn't happen in countries or states where these types of weapons aren't available. BUT MUH GUNZ! So people keep dying.

I hope it is a win for conservatism, but we'll see. I think MAGA folks have a misguided idea of what authoritarian power a Republican speaker can wield with a narrow house majority, and Dem control of the Senate and Executive branch. His primary role in such a situation is to get unity among the house republicans to overcome guaranteed unity among house democrats, and to use that unity to negotiate acceptable small advances which can get through the Senate and POTUS. McCarthy seemed pretty well suited for that role, except for the handful of petulant children like Gaetz. Now we'll see what the petulant children can accomplish. I don't hold out much hope, because people like Gaetz don't want to actually accomplish anything, they want publicity for their future political ambitions, and screaming "oh noes the establishments$#@!" gets a lot more traction than accomplishing things.

As a general rule of thumb I'm against things like "Red Flag" laws that restrict a person's 2nd amendment rights, but it seems to me we should all be able to agree that someone with documented mental health issues to the point of being hospitalized should have to prove it's safe for them to possess a firearm and not the other way around. I don't know if that would have prevented this tragedy but it does seem like common sense that would hold up in court.
