I like Donald Brown. Wells is ok too.If you want receivers I'd go Maclin and Percy Harvin.
This assumes Moreno and Crabtree are drafted 1, 2.
The one good thing about Maclin is that I think if he performs reasonably well in camp, he can be the #3 WR almost immediately, and challenge for the #2 slot by year end.
If Philly trades either Jackson or Curtis before the season starts, then I'd bet that he's a whole lot better than we thought he'd be at this stage of his young career, and I'd jump on that bandwagon in a hurry.

Crawfish - you are telling me Chris 4.24 Johnson is going to run faster when he's 28? WOW, maybe a 4.18?some rookies may come in with an attitude. Some will also work very hard understanding where they are at on the totem poll.
I like two Rookies - Crabtree and Harvin and that's all - their level is way above the other rookie WR's IMO. These two guys have something special on the field. Talent Level I suppose is my point.
Like I said though, we shall see
I wouldnt count on it.
some WR's will improve their speed for sure. but depending on the type of workout program a player takes, (and depending on what the team wants) a player may be willing to sacrafice some speed to gain additional power/Strength to beat press coverage. If this means bulking up, the player is not guaranteed to improve on their speed. it may stay the same, or drop a bit.
Usually you can read between the lines when a coach says something like, "he has to improve his play against press coverage" This means the offseason training will be focused on improving strength more than speed.
so he may work out for a year or two to improve strength, and lose a half a step. Then after gaining the ability to beat press coverage, maybe he moves back and works on speed again.

I vehemently disagree with the preceding post. You may already know my feelings on this question, but if you don't, I'd take the best low risk/high reward player available.
Never assume who is gonna be there. Your draft could go Moreno/Wells - then Donald Brown and Crabtree are no-brainer obvious choices.
If the draft goes Moreno/Crabtree, then it is Donald Brown and Hakeem Nicks. So Moreno, Crabtree, Brown, and Nicks have a high probability of NFL success IMO and all will contribute beginning year 1.
I'd stay away from the risk of Wells, McCoy or Maclin or either of the 2 QBs.
The risks involved with the others?
Wells - very high upside, but he'll be RBBC with Hightower year 1 - and ijust don't trust his desire to play hurt.
McCoy - very high upside but he's a project. In addition, he does not complement Westbrook (Thunder/Lightning), his game will be similar to Westys when/if he grows into it. so as long as Westy stays on the field, McCoy will only be a special teamer.
I would nto expect significant production until year 3 - and only then if he can learn the NFL game in terms of blitz pick-up, reading defenses, and cutting to the hole instead of backfield dancing.
Maclin - again, high upside, but he will likely have problems defeating the jams at the LOS and must significantly improve his route running skills. I see him reaching his potential about year 3.
Stafford/Sanchez - The bust rates for highly drafted QBs is higher than any other position. I like but don't love either of these guys.
Brown is certainly in a high powered offense. But Addai is ahead of him on the depth chart, so it may take a full year or two to unseat him from the starting role.
Nicks has potential. He's in a system that is designed for that type of WR, but once again, I think it may be a year or two until he's ready.
Having the 3rd and 4th pick in this draft is a beautiful thing, because you can get high upside athletes with lesser risk. I see the tier1/tier2 as being exactly 5 players deep, and the only significantly high risk one with enough potential to crack the top 5 is Wells.
I agree on the bust rates for QB's.
However, I believe his situation warrants grabbing one.
Cutler is fine, I think he'll be fine in Chicago, but sometimes you get a system or a coach that isnt suited to the QB, and suddenly your #1 qb is a backup. Based on this logic, it doesnt hurt to get a prospect into the system so that if the above comes to pass, you're not sitting there with no starting QB and no prospects. (dangerous place to be)
I'm not sold on either of those QB's but I think it's prudent to pick one of them in this situation.
I also agree with your comments on McCoy. He's the same type of player as Westy, and wont really put up numbers until Westy Retires or gets hurt. (whichever comes first)
I disagree on Wells. I think he will be the starter sooner rather than later as Hightower is adequate, but not outstanding and is more ideally suited to sharing carries or playing a backup role.
as for Maclin, you could be right. but your comments about Maclin tend to be typical of most first year WR's. If you draft a WR, you shouldnt expect major production for at least a year or two anyhow. (if you good stats in the rookie year, you should consider this a bonus)
Ditto goes for Nicks. Hes a rookie. dont expect him to perform in year 1, but if he does, that's a bonus.
if I had to go with WR's I'd pick Nicks & Maclin.
but I'd consider dumping one of these to grab a QB.

Jeff GarciaPassing - 22 TD / 14 INT 2,200 YDS
Rushing - 41 CARRIES FOR 50 YARDS 2 TDS
Darrius Heyward-Bey
Recieving - 52 REC FOR 800 YARDS 10 TDS
Rushing - 7 CARRIES FOR 52 YARDS
RAIDERS - 9 and 7.
sorry to burst your bubble, but I dont think Garcia will be a starter this year (or ever again) unless Russell gets hurt, or the raiders trade him to a team with QB troubles.
Heyward Beyes may well put up some numbers like you suggest, but I think it will be a year or two before we see it.

He was asked how they were able to overlook his positive test for weed, Childress said "he's got a nice personality and a great smile"How is this guy still a head coach in the NFL?
Great smile? bwahahahahaha.. is this the dating game of the NFL draft
I'm sure if BB did an interview about Brandon Tate, he would say he's got a great smile.
Well, as far as dodging questions from the media goes, I'll give Childress points for style.
I'm sure they went through a screening process with the player. A drug test usually can tell you not just whether someone has indulged in the banned substance, but also to what degree. It could well be a situation where the level of the banned substance in the blood indicate that it may have been a one time thing, then I think it's no surprise they took a chance on the guy.
Another thing to remember that Weed is not performance enhancing, or addicting, so if the team is convinced that he's not gonna do it again and they think the talent is there, they will take the risk based on the upside and hope they dont have another Ricky Williams situation. Of course, I think Williams was a heavy smoker and was willing to walk away from football to allow himself to maintain this 'bad habit'
of course williams had a very good career for a number of years prior to running into problems, and this may well be a situation they looked at as well.
either way, good for Childress that he didnt get roped into a conversation where no good can come of the result.

I have picks #3 and #4 of my upcoming rookie only draft because of a few trades I worked. It is a PPR league, who do I draft? Here are my skill players:
QB: Cutler
RB: Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Kevin Smith, Rashard Mendenhall
WR: Larry Fitzgarld, Lance Moore, Kevin Curtis (add in either TO or Lee Evans from free agency)
Who do I draft? Since I am stacked at RB, I am considering drafting a WR with one pick. I am leaning Wells and Maclin. Does anyone else have a different opinion? I can't pass on Wells.
How good is Maclin going to be? Will he be top 20 fantasy over the long haul of his career?
THere are really good free agent WR's coming up 2 years from now....including Brandon Marshall and Wes Welker. I am hoping to land one of them.
BTW: Moreno is going #1 and Crabtree #2....already confirmed.
I think Maclin is a fine pick. I'd also consider Nicks.
you look strong enough at RB so I dont think it's necessary to pick a RB.
One thing I'd consider doing with your team is I'd consider grabbing one of the QB's in this draft. Cutler is very good, but the change to Chicago and the change in offensive systems may hinder his numbers (sometimes it's tough to predict how a player will react to a change of scenery, so there is an element of risk there). Based on this, I think it wouldnt hurt to have a QB prospect in the pipeline even if you think Cutler will be fine.
I like Sanchez a little more than I like Stafford, but you cant deny that Megatron gives Stafford some huge upside potential going forward. If Detroit can ever get their organization sorted out, Stafford could be the best pick of the bunch.

The minimum sentence for unlawful possession of a handgun in New York City is 3 1/2 years. While the NFL has not issued any sanctions against him as of yet (they usually wait for the legal proceedings to play themselves out first), if convicted he won't be released until he's 35, at the earliest. Any talk of him playing again has to start with him staying out of jail for any length of time.yeah, but with parole, he'd be out in a year (give or take). It may be reasonable to expect him to try a plea bargain to reduce the time.
the key question is how long will his suspension last.
I do believe that regardless of the outcome, a team in need of a WR would probably take a chance on him when he becomes available.

Why would I need to dissect it? It's a pretty stupid statement to say Orton will be top-10 and that Cutler would be worse. It ranks up there with Tommy Maddox will throw for 5,000 yds.I've watched every game Orton has played. The guy is okay, would be a good QB2 or spot starter this year, but nothing more. People got too caught up in looking at the stats from last year without looking at their talent. There's a reason most of the Bears fans and media are ecstatic for the trade. Orton couldn't really throw the ball--he just managed the game and tried not to turn over the ball. Defenders didn't stack eight in the box against Cutler unlike they did against Forte, which is why the Bears' rushing wasn't good and Orton's passing sucked.
Bottom line is that Orton will improve and Cutler might have a step down, however no way Orton will be better than Cutler and be a top 10 QB. That's almost Tommy Maddox material.
I agree. Orton is an adequate 2nd string QB in most fantasy leagues.
Cutler moves from a top end 1st string guy to a mid range 1st string guy.
all I was saying in past posts is that Orton is not a top 10 fantasy QB and that the improvement in his numbers will be modest at best.

i think you are vastly overrating last years bears defenseI never said the defense was awesome. I'm just saying it was adequate overall.
what I am really saying is that denver's defense was incredibly horrible. I'm not entirely convinced they weren't the worst defense in the NFL last year.
some of the leads I saw that team blow were amazing. They got the lead with their good offense, and couldnt keep it late in the game when their defense couldnt stop anything.
I cant really see this improving in the near future.

I got to go with Stayin Put on Slaton too - only because his rookie season was impressive enough as it is. I didn't have any particular RB I expected the Texans to select, but I was surprised to see them go the whole draft without taking anyone at the position.I did read a month or so before the draft that Chris Brown may eat into Slaton's touches (at the goal line was mentioned), but I won't believe that until I see it. Even if it looks that way early on, it seems Chris Brown is about as fragile as they come. By the end of the season he's as likely be on IR as he is to be on the field.
I think Slaton's numbers will go up with the addition of Chris Brown.
for a portion of last year, Houston didnt really have anyone capable of stepping in to give slaton a rest. And I think it showed in some of the games where his effectiveness was not as high.
part of this could also be attributed to the fact that he was a rookie and still had to develop the mental toughness that is needed to perform at a high level day in and day out.
Brown is an good back for this purpose. I think hes too fragile to do much more, and I dont think he could step in for more than a couple of games if Slaton should get hurt.
I know some draft sites listed RB as an area of need for Houston, but from what I saw, Slaton looked fine. He just got a bit worn down late in some games. I think a good off season workout program and the step they took to sign Brown will help him out in this respect.

I wish the guy would retire.
it's not that I dont like him. I really was one of his biggest fans.
but to see him as a shadow of his former self kinda makes me sad. He's sticking around when he doesnt have the ability anymore. Sure, hes good enough to be a starter, but he used to be a perennial all star.
The difference between a starter and an all star is rather large. He should have retired after his last season in green bay.
at least that was a better than average season that he could hang his hat on and say ' I left the game at a time when I could still play well'
I am not so sure he can say that anymore.
Watching him last season just made me sad.

do you have to keep one of them???i would go mccallister if i had to
in my particlular league lawson was the 99th lb...he might be young, but i dont know if he is going to get any better
hester: charger drafted gatrell johnson who is quite good...so hester will be pretty much worthless
mccallister: he's age 30...and who knows where he might end up....maybe he might end up in like seattle or gb...then he might be worth it...but he has the best chance in the 3...but its pretty much pretty slim
I agree. the only one worth anything here is McCallister, and due to injury he may not be worth much now.
That being said, hester is worth nothing.
I dont generally consider keeping defensive players unless they are the best or second best in the league at their position. otherwise, defensive players are a dime a dozon, so I think Lawson is out.
-
The guys I'm looking at keeping are:RIVERS
MJD
PORTIS
K. SMITH
M. COLSTON
D. BOWE
J. WITTEN
We can only keep a max. of 2 players at each position. Offseason trades are available and I can package the player(s) I don't keep to move up draft position or acquire other players. I'm currently picking 10th in a 12 player league. I've got the feeling many of the teams will be protecting their QB's so I've thought about leaving Rivers off my list and grabbing him back with my first pick at 1.10. What should I do? Who to keep?
the players I would keep:
At RB: MJD, K Smith--------> Note: This looks like a team built more for the future than the present. Portis is getting to that age where he only likely has one or two more years left, and I dont think keeping him will put you over the top. If you make an offseason trade to put yourself in a better position for this season, you may wish to review this and keep him instead of K Smith. But I dont think this is the right call.
At WR: I'd keep Colston
At QB: I'd keep Rivers.
At TE: I'd keep Witten
I kept witten instead of Bowe because witten will put up 1000 yards receiving, and I expect Bowe will put up around the same (maybe slightly more)
given that there are only maybe one or two TE's in the league capable of doing this, I consider Witten to be of similar value to a WR that can put up 1300+ yards receiving.
you may wish to keep Bowe instead of Colston as he does have a bright future, but that KC Team is going to be weak for at least another year and maybe two.
at least Colston is in a high powered offense and you know he's gonna get his 1200+ yards per year regardless of how the team does.
hope this advice helps you.

I like the LJ pick - I owned him last year, and it was so frustrating because (besides his legal troubles) he was productive, but SOOOOO under-utilized. Throw in the fact that they brought in Cassel to stretch the DEF, and I think he could have a top10 year IF he gets the touches...What doesn everyone think of Donald Brown?? I'm a big Colts fan, but despite that I was preaching this guy be4 the draft (and I had never imagined the Colts would have interest in him)...He reminds me of the Matt Forte/Marshall Faulk/Edgerrin James/Emmitt Smith type RB - despite not doing anything UNBELIEVABLY WELL - he has great vision/patience, an explosive burst, and has a great combination of elusiveness and power. He has been regarded as a really high-IQ type player who can pick up blitzes and catch the ball, and should pick up the Colts offense quickly. Addai is always getting hurt/taking himself out of games, I think Brown could get 250+ touches which would result in 1200 total yards and possibly 10+ TDs in that offense.
Also - Kevin Smith: I really thought the Lions shouldve addressed the OLine with the #20 pick overall, but nonetheless they have upgraded (slightly). If Culpepper (with a year under his belt) or Stafford (if he's all he's made out to be) can be even decent as the QB throwing to Calvin, the Lions should be able to have some success on the ground. Kevin Smith seems like he will have very little competition getting touches, and he is very talented (this guy lead the nation in rushing his senior year in college). I think if this offense gets their sh!t together, he could have a Frank Gore/Steven Jackson type breakout year (1,500-2,000 total yards and 10-15 TDs).
Just my $.02
Cassel isnt going to stretch any Defense. He's not that kind of QB. his game is the short game. If he was the type to stretch a defense, Moss would have put up huge numbers last season and it just didnt happen..
The people who will benefit from the addition of Cassel will be the possession receivers.
Personally, I dont know that KC is the kind of place where Cassel will put up the best numbers. But he's there now, so I wish the guy luck.

I dunno about Wayne. Last year was totally frustrating for Wayne owners with his disappearance from the stats sheet for ssveral weeks. Manning looks for focking TE's now and that little twit Gonzalez was stealing TDs too. Wayne underperformed last year, no argument. Barber is a horse at times but the Cowboys have other ways to score too and Barber tailed off badly last year.I wouldnt want either player for next season.
well, part of waynes weaker production was the injury to Manning.
Clearly if the QB is playing subpar, the receivers are going to be in the same boat even if the receivers are playing well.
I expect wayne to bounce back.
-
i kinda think im crazy for thinking this, but logically it kinda makes sense. coming from a run first team where even if the run wasnt working, it would be forced anyway, he goes to a team with brandon marshall, eddie royal, and the coach that engineered brady's 50 td season. coming off an 18td 12int season in chicago, it only makes sense that he goes up from there. is 25td 17int out of the question?I'm not sure he's worth Orton + 2 first round picks. I think he's just worth 2 first round picks and the bears dumped Orton because they dont want to pay the additional salary.
The reality is that if Orton wins the starting job, I believe he will do okay. Certainly better than he did in Chicago.
but I do not expect a Big Season.
It is always a lot easier for a QB to have a good TD/INT ratio when you know that if your drive stalls the defense will hold(as was the case in Chicago). Orton wont have this luxury in Denver. The broncos defense is terrible and he will end up forcing some throws that he wouldnt have considered in Chicago. I expect slightly more yards (300-500) passing than last year. I know you are expecting more, but remember that the Broncos defense sucks and the offense will spend a lot more time sitting than it did in Chicago. And the TD/INT will be more like 19/21.
That's my prediction.

OK,,,,, supposed to be a poll, but My idiocy is taking over...Lendale White
Ricky Williams
Thomas Jones
Julius Jones
I need to keep one of these backs for next year. Who has the biggest potential. Are the Jones' boys done? Does Ricky show up elsewhere? Lendale have any chance in Tenn?
Thanks for your input!!
those are some scary options.
and what's even more scary is I think Julius Jones may be your man.
of course, this is if you had to decide today.
I like Ricky Williams ant Thomas jones better than Julius, but Julius is the only guy in Seattle. and I have more faith in the seahawks than I do the Jets. (especially if Farve retires) Ricky could be the best choice if he lands on a team with a half decent O-Line and a smart coach (provided he stays away from the weed in that timeframe)
but these are things you cant guarantee at this time.
As this is your third string guy, take the guy guaranteed to get the reps and the playing time.
Julius Jones.

There was nothing wrong with their team this season, they just underachieved and McNabb was part of that. They have a great defense, with one of the best d-coordinators in the league. Desean Jackson is an idiot, but he provided a nice deep threat. Westy is one of the best offensive weapons in the league and he had a relatively healthy season.
Where does Donovan carrying anything come into play? Because he got benched he started playing better, allowing Philly to live up to their potential.
You're a bitter man.
Perhaps you should start drinking some decaffinated coffee.

Warner's been my favorite player for years. He has indeed had a career of dramatic highs and lows, but he has maintained his gracious manner throughout.Warner's greatest attribute as a QB is the ability to make quick decisions and zip it out of there under pressure. He's not a playmaker like Favre or Big Ben; he doesn't have that kind of mobility; he's more like a Dan Fouts. In order for Warner to be successful, he needs confidence in a) himself and his decisions, and
in the ability of his receivers to get to the open spot. I think he lost some confidence in St Louis after developing a case of the fumbles, and he didn't recover that confidence under Coughlin's tight, "no mistakes" regime. He got his mojo back when given a freer rein in AZ. Not only that, he has WRs who are the equals of Holt and Bruce during the Rams' glory years. He knows that they're likely to come down with a catchable ball.
Warner has HOF credentials except for marginal career stats. He came into his own at an advanced age, unlike a Big Ben who has several years under his belt at age 26. If Warner plays another year or two, his lifetime totals will satisfy the HOF voters. He hasn't been a guy who could carry a team in the way a Favre or Unitas could, but you could say the same of many QBs already in the Hall.
I don't think Warner is really disrespected. Journalists and fans just don't trust him reflexively, because he is prone to ups and downs. If Warner can manage to win the Super Bowl and cop another MVP, he might consider taking a leaf from Favre's playbook and spend all winter mulling over a retirement decison, maybe even calling press conferences to announce that he hasn't decided yet. That should get him some additonal attention.
You forgot one thing.
Warner needs a solid O-Line to be successful.
because he cant scramble and because of his concussion issues in the past, he needs this. This was part of the reason his career went in the toilet for a couple of years. Poor O-Line.
I give him full credit. I didnt think Arizona had the talent to make it this far in the playoffs this year, but Warner has taken the team on his back and made it happen.
Cudos to him.
-
This is exactly what I love about the NFL. Nobody really knows squat about what is going to happen any given Sunday. Just like the Giants last year, the Cards, after getting dissed by every "knowlegable" analyst, are getting hot in the playoffs, and now it is anybodies ball game. I am not a Arizona homer, but I am a Warner fan, and would love to see them take it the distance.....with Warner retiring a champ (again).Well, nobody was more surprised than me.
however, I think the cards were actually the first or second team to clinch a playoff spot, so they had the benefit of giving teams a different look than they planned to use in the playoffs, rest key starters, and more.
I'm still surprised to see them here, but they had a good game plan and they executed.
so good for them.
Just remember.... they havnt won anything Yet.
-
WTF phillybear...you are a bigger hater than the Cowboys fans. McNabb absolutely played a good game against a VERY tough NYG defense in poor conditions (i.e. wind). He made some very nice stick throws and those 2 long passes (1 that was dropped by Curtis, the other caught by Jackson) were things of beauty. He led his team to a playoff win over the #1 team in the NFL.Your shtick is way old and flat-out wrong.
I'm not gonna make judgement on the Career of McNabb until he retires. But I will say that a superbowl is the icing on the cake for any good career, and so far he does not have it.
but I will say, he played a hell of a game against a very tough NYG defense as was mentioned by this guy earlier.
Personally, I am surprised this team made it as far as they have this year. Not because of McNabb, but because of his supporting cast.
If he carries this team on his back to the superbowl and wins it, I'll vow to forever stand by him and say he is a clutch QB because I dont believe this team has enough talent to win the super bowl.
With that being said, he defeated the defending champs (for the second time this year) with that inferior team, so I'm watching with great interest.
-
Personally, I think he will begin to connect with Romo at some point before the end of the season.
I've kept him in my lineup as a #4 WR (we start 3 in our league) and I think he has value there. He was my #5 guy, but Matt Jones is now about to serve a 3 game suspension so I dropped him.
-
I have done what this owner is doing, and it worked out well for me.If he knows he will make the playoffs, and wants to "manipulate" who he plays in them, then fine. He deserved the right to do so, by making the playoffs!
And - look at Indy sitting their starters last year - and Tampa, etc. The pros do it, too!!!
Yeah, but the pros can actually injure their stars by playing them. You cannot.
-
as a sidenote... i have intentionally started a weaker lineup in hopes of losing a game and drawing a different playoff opponent in the first round but i was i believe the top team at the time and simply wanted to fall to 2nd and play the 3rd place team... the 4th place team was getting healthy and hot.no ones playoff hopes were at risk
This to me is a different issue.
You are screwing yourself (in terms of position in the standings)
You arent deciding who makes the playoffs and who does not. This, to me is not considered to be an issue.

well, I would bet that his off season workout program targeted strength and durability/endurance.
If he comes into camp with an extra 5-10 lbs of muscle, you may well see a more powerful back that can get it done at the goal line and wont get worn down to the degree he did last season.
however, we shall see what happens.
all I know is I got him in my keeper league (keep 3 auction format for the rest) for 1$ and he was well worth the cash.
