Look at who’s their new coach, he’s a very prideful person, cleaning house wasn’t a surprise, he wants to win with his guys.  Might cost him a little time early on.

well, if my memory serves me, didnt his team draft a pile of O linemen when he became the 49ers coach way back?

It doesn't tend to matter too terribly much in my experience if they're drafted in the 1st round or not considering there's usually no more than one or two any more.

Sure, when there's an Ezekiel Elliott or Saquon Barkley drafted it's much more hyped than this season but any good fit will be jumped on. Everybody is still wanting to find the new break out RB.

true.  it is getting harder to find a difference maker at RB for fantasy.   so there will always be people drafting the rookies in a good situation regardless of where they were drafted in real life

I can respect a debate taking a online player with a developing young Qb.  But they have very little playmakers, Ekeler, Allen, M Williams gone, they need a wr1 today, I’m saying they should have gone wr.

I would have been happy with a WR as well.

but investing in the O line to protect your all star QB (who is still young) is never a terrible idea.

I honestly hoped they would draft a top WR and then come back in round 2 to take an O Lineman and then maybe a RB in round 3.

bottom line: there are too many holes to fill in this draft.   I think there may have been value in keeping one of the incumbent WR for one more year before cleaning house

Eli has a better chance of finding his belly button than the Hall of Fame. And believe me, that's not going to be easy.

honestly, I'm not a Manning fan.  but hes won 2 superbowls.   Most QBs dont even get one superbowl appearance let alone win the thing.

if it happens once I suppose it could be a fluke if the player catches lightning in a bottle.    but he won it twice.   not a fluke.

trust me, I'm not a Giants fan, but I'll give cudos where they are deserved.   Manning was a very good QB.

After the Chargers passing on a wr, the Raiders picking a TE when they could have filled another spot wit; a bigger need was a very questionable pick, Mayer look like he was going to be ready to go in year two for him.

well, it was a fairly deep draft at WR.     and I would argue the O line needed help too.  and if my memory is correct some of the starters were on the wrong side of the age 30.

so even if it wasnt on fire, it probably will be soon enough.    and in a deep draft, they can come back and get another WR in round 2 or 3.    With Harbaugh just returning to the NFL from college, he likely has the inside scoop on a few players that are not first round picks.

Well, I guess I gave you too much credit. Mayer is more than just a blocker. He's not the receiver Bowers is, but he ran a lot of routes last year. read any scouting report on him coming out of Notre Dame and he is a viewed as a complete TE....

from what I've seen he was starting to look like a legit player at the position in the 2nd half of last year.

while the team CAN play 2 TE's his playing time is going to drop.    You dont usually draft a TE in round one and then sit him on the bench.  hes getting a decent amount of playing time.

on the other hand if I was a TE needy team I'd be picking up the phone to see if Mayer is available.

So dumb.  2 tight end sets are ran probably 10% of the time, and you could rotate QBs if you wanted to, but of course, the starter would cry about that too

its a good way to piss off all the QBs on the roster.   everyone wants to start.  thats the way these things go.

The top TE went to the Raiders, who already roster Mayer.  That’s a tough situation if you want to take a rookie te.

yeah, that was a bit of a surprise pick for me.  it was looking like Mayer was going to become a very good TE.

I guess maybe they run a lot more 2 TE sets but not many teams have done this successfully.  most successful one I can think of in recent memory was the Pats with Gronk and Hernandez before Hernandez went to jail.

barring that, I think it means someone is likely to get moved.

  9. 10 minutes ago, weepaws said:

A team can do both. They can rotate qbs, and have two qbs on the field at the same time.

yes, but history has shown that it is a rare case where you can run with 2 QB and win.

i suspect it is because a QB needs to play in order to stay sharp.    so taking equal reps means both QB's under perform.

if these guys play both QB's equally by design and win with it you can expect a full apology from me at seasons end, but I honestly dont think it will come to that.

But no matter how you slice it, it doesn't make sense.

They could of had Justin Fields for almost nothing. Why spend 1st round draft capital on a position you don't need?

Penix isn't exactly perfect, he older, has health issues and a lot of questions regarding his talent.

we dont know what goes on behind the scenes.  thats why everyone watches the draft because teams do things we dont expect.

keep in mind all these GM's have connections at the college level.     They have opinions they trust and others they dont and some have the inside scoop on certain prospects that few (if anyone else) have.   This is why some players rise and fall on the draft board unexpectedly.

clearly this GM loves the player.  otherwise he wouldnt have taken him.    in a couple of years we will all find out if he was right.   in the interim, its Cousins show.   Not much else to say about that.

  11. 15 minutes ago, Maximum Overkill said:

Have you seen Penix's medical history? It makes Cousins look like the healthiest person on the planet.

If they were worried about Cousins injury, they drafted the wrong person.

yeah but bouncing back from a major injury at the age of 35 is different than it is at 24.

dont get me wrong, I think the team could have made a better pick here.    its even possible they signed cousins not thinking they'd be able to get a QB at the draft table.

either way, getting a young QB when your starter is 35+ in terms of age is probably not a bad thing in the long run.    short run.... not so good.   but if they think they cant win a superbowl with cousins maybe this is the succession plan already in place.

Yeah, and there will certainly be some RBs taken high in most drafts too, always is

true.  but as none were drafted in round 1 I could likely only see possibly 1 (maybe 2) going in round 1 if they land in really good spots where there is a clear path to a starting role.

as no RB's have been taken yet, its too early to predict this.   but you are probably right.   1 RB likely will go in round 1 of your dynasty.   Maybe even 2

    I would expect this, yes.

With as much hype from the nfl coaching circles regarding this kid he better at least be pushing for the starter spot come camp.

well, one thing is for sure, I dont know that Darnold has ever had this kind of talent at WR.  if he cant make it here, he should never get another chance (in my opinion)

but JJ has a lot of the traits you would want in a QB to run this offense.

I personally think it is only a matter of time til he unseats Darnold.   the only question I have is whether it is week 1 or maybe mid season (presumably after the bye)

The playbook McCarthy received from Vikes had a $100 bill taped to the very last page....

JJ found it and then mailed it back to the Vikes with the message, "save this for when we win a Super Bowl".

wow, thats a cool story.  maybe we should write a movie about this and tell a story.

we could call the movie Draft day and talk about all the trials and tribulations of a GM on draft day.

    it would be great!

Well, I'd argue that if they really cared about winning (a championship and not just a nice regular season record), they wouldn't have signed Cousins in the first place.

fair point.  his playoff record leaves a lot to be desired.

but in the regular season hes been money.    either way I never thought he was the long term solution,  and given the draft pick here, maybe the team doesnt either.

given his age and the major injury hes coming back from.....I figured hed be a 1 or 2 year band aid solution.    when the wheels fall off for a QB the fall is fast.   he might have 3 or 4 years left, but he also might only have 1.   its even possible hes finished already and none of us know it.

its tough to say but the injury complicates things a lot more as well.

  16. and honestly at least one or two good TE's.   you wont have to spend a first on a TE (unless its a large league) as the QB and WR should dominate round 1

  17. 1 minute ago, Maximum Overkill said:

No, it tells Cousins that they don't care about winning now. They could of picked a player to help them win immediately but instead chose a backup QB who does nothing to improve the team.

    It's a horrible pick.

maybe when they signed him they told him they'd draft someone and that they want him to mentor the kid.

sometimes that part is just as important as the on field part.

either way this is all speculation.  but I have to think if Cousins gave them a 2 year window before he likely retires, now is the perfect time to draft someone and let him learn in a low pressure atmosphere.

keep in mind Cousins is 35 and coming off a major  injury.   his good health is far from guaranteed.

They way the Chargers have behaved this off-season, their trying to rebuild. I doubt they do that by trading away picks for a veteran receiver. They've got two picks tonight (2.05, 3.05) in which they could draft a receiver.

honestly it wouldnt surprise me to see them take a guard as well.   it feels like both the coach and the GM are committed to putting together a good line and if this is to be a wasted year might as well make sure that line is top notch.
