RicemanX 20 Posted March 16, 2006 http://www.sf49ers.com/newsroom/DisplayNews.asp?newsid=3201 Good move. Kinda mad we didn't try to make a move for Demps or Hope.
Stalker711 0 Posted March 16, 2006 Harris gets no love for what he contributed to the WAS secondary last season. He really carried the 'Skins with 13 starts while Carlos Rogers learned the ropes, and Shawn Springs spent his usual four or five games hobbled. He will be a quality starter until such time as they grow a better CB. Not a flashy signing, but certainly one that adds value to this franchise. Thanks Nolan. The team will thank you later... In some ways I agree - but I'd rather have him as a nickelback at this point in his career. If he is a starting DB, then that would seem to indicate a failure of Nolan & Co to build a better secondary. But I do agree that it's a great signing. He's a pro. He will come in and bring a maturity to the team - a veteran presence that will be a good influence on the influx of young players the Niners are sure to have after this draft. Thats exactly why I like him. He's a quiet vet who will provide the leadership on the field, and mentorship on the practice field that whatever young DB they sign to start will need. He is an excellent #3 CB, and a decent #2. Will provide the transition needed to bring a young CB in without throwing them to the wolves.
SmartassBoiler 0 Posted March 16, 2006 Hope got way too much money. I understand you guys are in dire need of secondary help, but there was no reason to match or exceed the Titans offer to Hope given that he's pretty much an average safety. Amazing what a Super Bowl win can do for an average player.

coachnorm 0 Posted March 17, 2006 I agree with the 49er fans in this thread, a very solid addition to this ballclub.
dj_stouty 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Skins fans will tell you that he was the weakest starter on the defense last season. For your sake, I hope he isn't starting...
Tusekan Raiders 0 Posted March 18, 2006 Is there another Walt Harris in the league those who are praising this guy are confusing Walt Harris the stone-handed, mediocre-tackling, slow-footed journeyman CB with? I guess adding ANY CB is a good move for SF, since they were starting UDFA's with all the injuries, but SF is about the only team in the league you could remotely consider Harris an upgrade on, which still doesn't make it a good move. Walter34 3 Posted March 18, 2006 Didnt realize Harris was still playing. maybe they can pick up Vestee Jackson as well FWIW: 1996 Draft: 1 Keyshawn Johnson Jets WR USC 2 Kevin Hardy Jaguars LB Illinois 3 Simeon Rice Cardinals DE Illinois 4 Jonathan Ogden Ravens T UCLA 5 Cedric Jones Giants DE Oklahoma 6 Lawrence Phillips Rams RB Nebraska 7 Terry Glenn Patriots WR Ohio State 8 Tim Biakabutuka Panthers RB Michigan 9 Rickey Dudley Raiders TE Ohio State 10 Willie Anderson Bengals T Auburn 11 Alex Molden Saints DB Oregon 12 Regan Upshaw Buccaneers DE California 13 Walt Harris Bears DB Mississippi State 14 Eddie George Oilers RB Ohio State 15 John Mobley Broncos LB Kutztown (PA)
49ER MAN 0 Posted March 18, 2006 He's a slight upgrade to what they have. He's a veteran guy who knows how to play the position and is nothing special. Hopefully he can stay healthy, unlike Plummer, who is gone, and Rumpf. yikes... I'm thinking they may take Michael Huff with the no.6 pick although they could grab hawk if he's available. He's more than likely going to be a nickel back, so settle down. He's a seasoned pro and won't hurt them with dumb penalties - you don't play DB for 10 years because you suck. No one's thinking he's the same player he was in 1996, but he's better than what they have. Not like Raider fans have anything to chirp about - correct me if I'm wrong, but your secondary didn't stop the Raiders from having a 4-12 record last year too, eh? Paid Moss & Jordan all that money and what did that talent buy you? The same record as the Niners. They even lost the coin toss, so for practical purposes, they did worse than the Niners last year. And hey - at this point, I bet the Raiders are looking at Alex Smith with envy considering they have no QB. Man, are Aaron Brooks or Joey Harrington going to look terrific in Sliver & Bleak or what? Give us a break - Raider fans have absolutely nothing to hang their hats on right now. Keyshawn still wasn't worthy of the #1 overall selection, but man that's a talented pool of players. Hardy, Rice, Ogden, Glenn, Dudly, Upshaw, George and Mobley? Then again, it also included Lawrence Phillips. Still - high percentage of top picks that went on to a good career.

Whatever team someone is a fan of and their opinion of a random player are mutually exclusive. The only reason I see for people taking a discussion in this direction is when they have no basis to actually argue their opinion on the player. If you'd seen him play much, you'd know how incredibly average, at best, he was at the "peak" of his career. Now he's past his prime and the only team that wants him as even a back-up is the one that went through a dozen corners last year. I could rest my case on circumstantial evidence. Whatever.... He's way better than anybody else in the whole Star Wars movie, so you have no room to talk.
