Cape Cod Arson Update with PICTURE LINK

Recommended Posts

Not sure if anyone hear remembers my story about the family vacation home getting burned to the ground about a year and a half ago, but here is the update:

Second man of arson duo sentenced to prison

March 23, 2006

BARNSTABLE, Mass. --The second member of an alleged arson duo which authorities say set a string of fires on Cape Cod two years ago was handed a state prison sentence to go along with an earlier federal conviction.

Thomas B. Aseltine, 23, of Hyannis, pleaded guilty in Barnstable Superior Court to a lengthy list of arsons and related crimes that officials said resulted in more than $1 million in damage to properties and vehicles from Wellfleet to Falmouth. Judge Gary Nickerson sentenced him Wednesday to 10-to-12 years in prison.

Jordan McCarroll, 25, of Lakeville, pleaded guilty to the same crimes earlier this month and also received a 10-to-12-year state prison sentence.

Aseltine and McCarroll both will serve seven-year federal sentences for burning a Wellfleet cottage on Cape Cod National Seashore property. They will serve the difference between the state and federal sentences in a Massachusetts state prison once they are released from the federal system, the Cape Cod Times reported Thursday.

The men began their Cape arson spree at a building in Eastham on Jan. 6, 2004, according to First Assistant District Attorney Michael Trudeau. The buildings burned included five houses, one business and a multi-unit housing complex that was under construction.

The pair also are accused of breaking into two cars, one of which was set on fire.

Aseltine will get credit for the 492 days he already has served in federal prison.

I imagine the Federal penalties have got to be stiffer? :o Sucks for them. The silver lining for us is the new house is almost complete. It is gonna be about twice as big as the old one and way more modern. The old place was close to 100 years old and really was just a few steps up from camping. No shower, cast iron tub, leaky roof, etc. We are gonna need to rent it out some of the time for maybe two or three years to make up the difference between the actual cost and the insurance, but the Realty Co. said we should expect to get about $3,500 per week :shocking: minus their 10%....sounds kinda high to me, but still pretty kick ass to hear. :first:

Is it in WellFleet? We usually rent a place in Wellfleet every summer. I live in Chicago but grew up in Massachusetts. We usually go in with my sister's family and rent a summer place for a week or two. We have a place for the first week of August this year. Wellfleet is our favorite part of the Cape and we always find a place there. How big is your place? Let me know where it is. Maybe we can rent it next year.

It's in Dennis, right off off 6A, but on a really private lot of close to seven acres of forest land on a small fresh water lake with a private beach. Exactly 1 mile from the ocean if that is the kind of "beach" you like. I'm not sure of the exact square footage, but it is pretty big, but still being built. It must be pretty close to done now though.

My uncle used to have a cottage in Dennis. Nice area. Post some pictures in the summer. Maybe you can find some geek renters and save on the 10% realty fee.

With the prices i have seen people paying for some of the shacks down there, this place is gonna fetch a nice price if you ever sell it.

It's the land that is most valuable....almost seven acres of untouched woodland in the middle of the Cape....total privacy....could film a outdoor pron movie there, if I wanted to. :ninja:
