Franknbeans 46 Posted April 29, 2006 There are not many roster spots open at all. They were not going to draft 10 players cause there are no roster spots open. When you have the chance to get the best WR in the draft (even if it is a weaker year), you just do it. And the Steelers have filled their kick returner spot with this pick too. Lets review the Steeler 1st round history: 2003 Steelers get best safety in the draft (by performance so far) 2004 Steeelers get best QB in the draft (by performance so far) 2005 Steelers get best TE in the draft (by performance so far) 2006 Steelers get highest rated WR in the draft Great post
murf74 461 Posted April 29, 2006 I have been out for a while, but I don't see Bing or KO Simpson off the board yet. Come on, come on....
Steel City Blues 0 Posted April 29, 2006 Back from the stadium and ... Holmes pick Talk about best case scenerio. All the action taking DBs and DL shuffled out well for us. Me of little faith didn't think he could fall that far. Round 2 pick is drawing near!
murf74 461 Posted April 30, 2006 Trade with Minn. I don't get it. Does Minn. have 2 3rd rounders or something?
Steel City Blues 0 Posted April 30, 2006 Trade with Minn. I don't get it. Does Minn. have 2 3rd rounders or something? There was much rejoicing. yeaaaah, then we ate the Minstral. They do have two third rounders. (mid & late) Not sure what we got in return. I'm guessing our staff isn't sold on Ko Simpson or Bing. Not sure what we have brewing. It looks like we have picks 83 and 95 from Minn according to round three on NFL.com Not sure if there is anything else.

I'm guessing our staff isn't sold on Ko Simpson or Bing. Not sure what we have brewing. They may have both rated equally and have seen the 18 teams picking ahead of us and will roll the dice they will still be there. Heck, they may had similar grades for a group of 20 guys (kind of like in fantasy football when you can't decide between a bunch of equal WRs). So they don't care who slips cause it will be equal talent. And they get the 3rd rounder that they lost back!
murf74 461 Posted April 30, 2006 Pitts' newest safety. Everyone's highlights look good, but I like the looks of him. http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/sports?ch=...ollbars=no' From Boylhart Anthony Smith S Syracuse Strengths Anthony might be one of the most complete safeties in this draft. He is a head up, wrap up, squeeze and drive tackler. He is a smart player that is like a coach out on the field and he shows excellent leadership qualities. Anthony biggest strengths are his burst to the ball, instincts and hands to make the interception. Anthony is a playmaker and I would take him any day on my team. Needs to Improve Anthony does not have the pure speed needed to be a cover safety. He needs to keep the play in front of him. He will be more at home in a two deep zone defense. His quick burst to the play should be more impacting and he will get a lot of interceptions for you if a team that uses a two deep zone safety defense drafts him. Bottom Line Anthony is a playmaker. He loves to play football. He loves the hitting and the tackling and the mental portion of the game. Anthony makes up for his lack of pure speed by being in the right position and taking the right angles and being decisive in his play on the field. He is a playmaker and when the ball is in the air - as far as he is concern it belongs to him. He will be an excellent special teams player because like I said before - he loves to play. Anthony is one of those players that play’s faster then he times. He is a football player not a track star. I bet when the other players were working on their forty times he was in the film room looking at his next opponent. As far as I’m concerned Anthony is too much of a playmaker not to be picked in on the first day of the draft but it is not unusually for safeties to last longer. Here is the difference – Anthony is not just a safety. He is a playmaker and that is a big difference when you’re thinking about drafting players to make your team. He is not just a player that is going to come in a do a good job. Anthony is a difference maker.
murf74 461 Posted April 30, 2006 Steelers need a big RB on the 2nd day. I would love Cedrick Humes or G. Riggs to name a couple. Don't know how far those guys are slated to go???? 2 fourth rounders and 2 fifth rounders, hopefully a couple gems are there.

McBokonon 1 Posted April 30, 2006 Steelers need a big RB on the 2nd day. They're supposedly making a move for Duckett
Orgazmo 2 Posted April 30, 2006 Duckett (6-0, 254) has fallen out of favor under a new regime in Atlanta and the Falcons yesterday drafted his replacement, Jerious Norwood, a running back from Mississippi State on the third round. WTF? Getting a little ahead of themselves aren't they? Norwood has to first prove he can anything but a special teams player. Steelers would be better off going for Travis Henry. Far more proven and probably far more available.
Eck 0 Posted April 30, 2006 hopin Cedric Humes falls to them at the end of the 5th... and hoping they pick him!
murf74 461 Posted April 30, 2006 can someone explain the logic to me of that second WR? Best kick/punt returner coming out of the draft. Runs a 4.37 in the 40. He is just a playmaker. Did you watch the FSU PSU Orange bowl game? He is the one who took a punt return for a TD. I don't think the Steelers would want to put their #1 Holmes in harms way on kick returns. Let him be a WR and let Reid be a KR
Eck 0 Posted April 30, 2006 Omar Jacobs... not bad... we kinda did need a little youth at backup QB. Teach him well Charlie Batch! hehe
Diesel07 0 Posted April 30, 2006 Heres a lil sum'n sum'n on Reid Reid finally broke through for FSU's offense when he was picked in the third round by the Super Bowl champion Steelers. Reid's big plays on special teams -- he had an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown against Virginia Tech and an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown against Penn State -- certainly helped his draft status. In an interview with the Steelers' official web site, Pittsburgh receivers coach Bruce Arians said Reid was too good to pass up at that spot. "He is another extremely fast quick guy who can play inside outside and is a great return guy," Arians said. "He is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands. In the Orange Bowl, he made some big plays as a punt returner. It is hard to pass on guys like that. He was ranked so high." Reid said he had hopes of being drafted higher, but liked where he landed. "I think everyone has expectations of being drafted higher than they really are," Reid said. "I'm just happy to be a Steeler, to be with the loyal fans, and to play for one of the great organizations in football." As a senior, Reid posted 1,325 all-purpose yards leading the 'Noles. His statement games came on special teams in both the ACC Championship game and the Orange Bowl against Penn State where he returned a punt for a touchdown. The Super Bowl Champs are hoping to use Reid in as many ways as they can. "They're bringing me in because I'm an all purpose guy," said Reid. "It'll be interesting to see how they use me." The 5-foot-10, 188 pound athlete will be reunited with former Seminole Bryant McFadden when he reports to mini-camp in a few weeks. "It'll be nice to know someone," said Reid,."I'm going to have to compete for a spot, but it's a big honor." Reid is one of my all time favorite Noels. He is a class act, humble guy. I don't really get into the hard line guarantee's of "this guy will fail" or "this guy will succeed." But those of you who are counting WR out should note that he is in the same situation as Steve Smith with Carolina. Steve was considered too small and his first year he only caught 5 or 6 balls but lit it up on Special teams. Then he got more WR reps the next year and we all know about him now. Reid's trophy case houses the ACC Championship and Orange Bowl MVP tropies and he ran a scorching 4.34 at the combine. He's got serious talent.

murf74 461 Posted April 30, 2006 I bow to the Steelahs' draft team... they picked up a guy in the 7th that I was hoping for in the late 5th! WELL DONE! As you can see from my posts this AM, I wanted him in the 4th. What a value pick at the end of the 7th. This guy will definitely make the team and when Duce gets hurt, step right in for the change of pace/short yardage back. I feel complete, now I will do a little dance....
