Next time a high profile college athlete thinks about turning pro

or staying in school.

They only need to remember one name Matt Leinart.

Would have been the 1st pick last year, ends up being the 11th this year. What a turd. :(

Yeah but he would have looked like a turd last year on the Niners regardless

Now he walks into a perfect situation, all his USC career people say he only produced cos of the talent around him

Now he walks onto a team with Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Edge, so i bet people will keep saying that, sounds like he did ok to me.

Yeah, what a turd. Fulfilling his commitment to the university, teammates, alumni, etc.

He gets to gradually work his way into a system that should be an ideal fit for him, tutored by a coach and QB that know it as well as anyone. When he does play, he'll be throwing to arguably the best WR corp in the game, with an All Pro caliber RB, in a new state-of-the-art stadium. He'll be set up to succeed, rather than fail. None of these things are true of San Fran last year, this year or in the forseeable future.

He will make less money on his first deal than he would have last year. Of course, we're talking NFL dollars. The difference between the two figures isn't even a real number to most people. He'll be a young star in a huge market. I think he'll squeak by without having to work a second job.

He will make more money over is career BECAUSE Arizona drafted him. With Boldin and Fitz, he will put up such huge #'s that they will have to renegotiate his deal 1/2 way thru so they can keep him. While this is going on, Norm Chow will leave Tennessee as Vince Young flops massively and Tenn. drafts in the top of the 1st for the next 5 years. He won't get a 2nd contract from Tennessee.

Mr. Carlin only sees the short term obviously. In hindsight, he DID do the right thing. He gets into a new stadium with top notch talent around him.

Easy for you to say, you're not the one that lost 10 million dollars of guaranteed money.

Actually I've seen reports that Alex Smith would have been ranked ahead of him on most boards. He was not a lock for the top 5-10. That was media created. He could have actually made more by staying school.

Yeah right. He did not win the Heisman again, he did not win a championship last year (and helped Vince leap over him in the draft ... basically), he could have graduated before going pro last year, and he did not get picked 1 overall. And like he had any say in landing in Arizona... What a great idea! NOT! He should have gone last year.... he was lucky to end up with the right team.

Alex Smith should have never been drafted #1.... They will throw him away in a couple of years... Just like Kyle Boller is getting ready to get canned.

Could not agree more. And, it will take a year or 2 before anyone outside of zona realizes what a bust he is.

I don't care about "shoulda". Fact is, from reports I've read (from scouts/GMs), Leinart would not have been the #1 QB taken last year. And could have fallen just like Rodgers.

And the "shoulda" come out, is clearly not true. The only thing that got him picked 10 before Cutler was his experience and polish.
