t.j 35 Posted May 5, 2006 Parcells was interviewed on Sirius this morning and it was a pretty interesting interview. I love listening to Parcells speak, he really thinks about what he has to say and makes very concise points. The total opposite of that melodramatic jackass Herm Edwards. He talked about what they are hoping to accomplish with minicamp. He said he likes to keep vets out of the minicamps because it can be intimidating to young players to have the vets there right away, and having it rookies-only allows them to get the hang of things, and allows the coaches to coach at the slower pace the young players need. He was asked to describe what kind of players he likes, since there's been so much speculation this offseason about which players are or aren't Parcells guys. He said he looks for what he thinks every employer looks for, he wants guys that are dependable and that want to earn a career at the job they are doing. (The Sirius hosts have been making a lot of jokes lately about Parcells saying things to his players like, "I can't trust you!" So I think he values dependability more than most employers...) He said TO has done everything that has been asked of him so far. He's not worried about TO from a conditioning standpoint because that is something he is good at, but this will be the first time he has played in an offense that wasn't a west coast offense. So they will have meetings with the positional coach for a week or two after minicamp with him to get him up to speed. He talked about the signing of Akin Ayodele, who will play the weak inside linebacker position. He said that not many teams run the ball to the weak side against a 3-4 defense and that should give Ayodele a lot of opportunities to get into pursuit quickly and be a "tackling machine." He was asked about Marion Barber and the RB situation. Paraphrasing here but this is basically what he said -- I like Barber a lot. He's very good at blocking, and receiving, and has good vision, he's just not a home run threat. Jones is a good runner and hasn't been able to stay healthy. Parcells talked a bit about the value of guys like Otis Anderson and Tiki Barber who don't have to come off the field. He said Marion Barber's role will definitely increase this year but still made it sound like Julius is the starter and the main guy at least until he gets hurt again. He was also asked about what it's going to take to win the division. He said well, he is a defensive guy at heart, so that is something he obviously views as a key. He said the Eagles have definitely improved, particularly with Bunkley and Howard, he feels like the Redskins have improved, and the Giants have improved for sure. He hopes the Cowboys can improve from being ranked about 10th defensively to top 5, and then they'll have a good chance to win.
