Your Daily Carson Palmer Update

Recommended Posts

Some have accused him as being a "hack", but he has connections. The following is from McAllister's website:

Things I'm told today....

From my "Bengals Insider":

On Carson:

Carson Palmer is now 8-9 weeks ahead of schedule. It now appears he will start the season as he is progressing rapidly. Team doctors are very encouraged that he has strengthened the leg to a point they feel is adequate. He now moves into a stretching and aerobic phase, where he will stretch the muscles more and build the endurance in the leg. The team originally felt that Carson wouldn't begin this phase until just prior to camp in July.

I don't imagine Palmer has done much throwing on that bum leg. He's spending so much time rehabbing the knee, everything else is going untouched.

Palmer is not veteran enought to just come in day one and pick up where he left off. Palmer won't hit stride until the 2nd half of the season. Will Cincy be a contender when that happens, or will they be buried and unable to put it all together and make a playoff run in a tough AFC?

Make no doubt about it that if he starts game one, the opposing defense will be bringing the pain.

He was wearing a brace when the injury ocurred. What else can you do? Why does it matter if the knee is surgically repaired?

I really don't understand these updates. I heard one today that Lewis thinks Palmer will play in the preseason. But the report above is telling us he is just now getting more flexibility and moving to a phase in rehab where he will stretch muscles that he hasn't really pushed since before the surgery. At most he is jogging and doing some half speed passing drills. Can he even do a five step drop at half speed yet?

How does Lewis translate this into him being ready in the next 70 days to play in a preseason game?

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis believes Carson Palmer (knee) will be available for the preseason. Asked if he thought Palmer would play in the preseason, Lewis said, "Yes."

But Palmer can't walk on water, but we know he can jog in water. http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories....04369284&EDATE=

I mean if he can jog in water, start stretching his leg fully, he can play in the NFL in 70 days, no doubt.....

Lewis is either putting up a smoke screen for his preseason opponents  or he has gone :headbanger:

Based on what I read in last week's SI Article (with Palmer on the cover)...

I'd be worried about an emotional letdown... Carson is working his ass off to speed up his rehab and it's a heroic effort on his part. His GOAL is to be ready for opening day... that's admirable, that's commendable... but after opening day, there's a grueling 16-game season and possibly playoffs! If Palmer can keep his energy and motivation that high for that long, it will be impressive.

And don't get me wrong, I want him to heal; I want him to achieve. It's good for football and football fans. But all the "experts" are focusing on all the physical obstacles that Palmer faces and I believe there will be a considerable emotional/mental battle for him too. There has been no offseason for Palmer... just one long grind to which the results are still somewhat unknown. That's gotta' wear on a guy no matter how good his intentions and work ethic.

Don't they face KC game one? More like bringing the mild nuisance.

That's funny. In all seriousness, though, teams are gonna bring heat up the middle on him. They will force him to move out of the pocket. Besides the physical aspect, it'll be the mental aspect that he'll need to get over. If he's afraid to move on it (for fear of re-injury), he'll sit in the pocket and get creamed all day long. A team like the Steelers will tee off on him all day long.

Cincy's gonna need to rely heavily on Rudi early in the year. I also think this knocks CJ and Housh's value down a bit as well.

Yep, that's about 1/2 speed and all movements are straight forward or straight up and down without any torque on the leg. The only drill that seemed to put any kind awkward movement was the ones where he side stepped some dummies and threw to someone that looked like Chris Henry (I think I saw a holster over his shorts). Kinda what I was excpecting in how far along he appeared to be, but I was kinda surprised to see a little limp when he was running at the end.

That was just his pimp lean, because he knows he has mad skills. Or it may be because he knows he's 8-9 weeks ahead of schedule.
