Giants Fan 85 Posted June 13, 2006 Still, a great gun. Very little has been done since Colt and Smith and Wesson, and Winchester perfected cartridge rounds and the revolver. I feel like a Winchester rifle is a better weapon though. AR-15, made by Colt ... ideal. M1 ... a club once you lose surprise. As far as handguns go ... I like my brother's .38, but it's really an antique. I have a steak knife ... and a glass jar of jalapenos. Old, stinky, jalapenos.

biscuitman357 0 Posted June 13, 2006 In terms of handguns, it depends on the person. You also have to factor in their handsize, their experience with firearms, etc. Easiest way is to go to the range and rent several handguns, see what feels comfortable. Reality is though, to be proficient with a handgun requires lots of practice and honestly, some tactical training. Most people would be better off not having a handgun in their homes, simply because they are not trained nor skilled enough to handle one. A shotgun would be a better alternative. Cheaper, easier to use, does not require as much training to handle. Massad Ayoob has written a couple of good books about home defense. I'd suggest anyone interested in owning a handgun for home defense read them, they cover a great deal, including liability.
ROBOKOP 0 Posted June 13, 2006 A night table "weapon" is designed to be the first thing you reach for in the scenario of a night time intruder. Because of this, you have to consider several things including accessability and practicality which would include ease of use, illumination, and effectiveness. You have to make sure the weapon is within arms reach but yet nothing you are going to roll over and hurt yourself with, it is also extremely important to keep the weapon out of any possible access of a child. You have to find a weapon you are comfortable and accurate with ie. when you wake up in a dead sleep you can function the weapon. Since it will be in the middle of the night with no lights on you need to accompany the weapon with a flashlight or have a tac light attachment. Finally the weapon has to do what it is designed to do: stop the threat. I have a .40 cal handgun on my nightstand: A Glock model 22 with the Sreamlight M6 laser/light or a S & W sigma. I would further reccommend a 12 ga shotgun with a tactical light under the bed. Cant miss with that bad boy.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 13, 2006 I absolutely agree, the 12 guage is the tried and true home defense weapon. You don't even hafta hit anybody, it's a psychological advantage. Big boom, and you don't need to aim to do damage. I think any weapon, in a home with a child needs to be locked up. Trigger guards are cheap. Really, the only time you need something like a .357 revolver ... you are using it to kill people, at short range. That's what it's for. I forget the statistics, but handguns in the home are more likely to cause a death in the family than kill an intruder ... it's like 20 to 1. Handguns, automatic weapons, .50 cal sniper rifles ... are all weapons designed to kill people. Maybe, we should stop makin' 'em available to the public! How cool would it be to have a .50 cal. With the right ammo, you could take out a vehicle with a single shot from over a mile! So much more of a superior weapon than what Oswald used, in the hands of the wrong person ... scary. http://www.rdecom.army.mil/rdemagazine/200...s/itf_50cal.jpg
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 13, 2006 There used to be a list, after 9/11, a surplus M1 list you could sign up for. The idea was pretty much, if the Army ever pulled up with a truck full of M1's, you'd be on the list and get a rifle. Last ditch effort soldiers. It's not a bad rifle, if you have enough men and ammo, and higher ground. It's really elegant in a way, not so different from todays .50 cal sniper rifle. http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2005/h...ffl03/index.asp
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 13, 2006 What you'd want to do, say to defend a ridge. 60 men with M1s. Is silently spread out into 3 groups of 20 in like a crescent. And then have one guy, fire a flare over the ridge, and then move, back to a predetermined safe zone. If the flare doesn't light 'em up, dig in. It could be a long night. Overnight, prepare a group to try and flank the ridge with a smaller force by sunrise. Surprise then retreat, and while the enemy is looking to defend the flank, open up with your rifelman on the main front and charge and break the line. See, that's why .... I'm on the list. You know what I always wanted? A Walther PPK. James Bond.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 13, 2006 I've had a couple Civil War Colt's .... you can find a 1851 Navy for $1,000 if you look hard enough. You can find a Colt .45 Auto (aka 1911) real cheap. Still, a great handgun too. There's a few Colts I'd love to have, like the .44 Dragoon. But the Holly Grail is ... the Patterson New Jersey Colt Revolver http://www.gmartin-auctions.com/feb03cat/c...s/258/258-1.jpg Ultra rare, first real revolver made by Colt. Giants Fan 85 Posted June 13, 2006 Fock "knockdown". If I can get 4 shots off, 3 hits in the torso ... yeah, we'll grapple when you get to me. I might give you some water as you bleed to death. That's was nice about the PPK, and it's a simple mechansim. In war, against a rifleman with a bayoneted rifle ... it's another story. That's why the Colt 1911, AKA the Colt Auto .45 was such an important weapon, because it was a .45, same ammo as the Thompson Sub Machine gun. Stopping power. Also why, the most expensive gun ever sold, I think still to date .... was a .45 Luger. See, the U.S. government almost bought from Luger, so a prototype was made. All the rest are 9mm, but there is one .45 Luger on the public market. Worth .... millions.
