What if you draft all low potential (but safe) players?

Recommended Posts

An example draft of what I'm talking about:

1st Round: Tiki Barber (RB)

2nd Round: Torry Holt (WR)

3rd Round: Hines Ward (WR)

4th Round: Warrick Dunn (RB)

5th Round: Matt Hasselbeck (QB)

6th Round: Curtis Martin (RB)

7th Round: Rod Smith (WR)

8th Round: Trent Green (QB)

9th Round: Pittsburgh (DT)

10th Round: T.J. Duckett (RB)

11th Round: Isaac Bruce (WR)

etc...

Few (none?) of these players are going to break out and have seasons like they've never had before, but few are going to be giant busts either. I normally like to take chances, but would if you just took the guaranteed points, and drafted these stable players? Smart? Stoopid?

I wouldnt call it stupid. But your not going to win a league with a team that is built like that. Mediocre players make mediocre teams that lead you to mediocre finishes. You have to have someone who is going to carry the load for your team every week, I agree. But you have to have someone who can bust open a big game for you, and I dont see the safe bet players doing that.

That said, I do draft in a conservative manor most of the time, but I will take risks on upside players, just not in the 2nd or 3rd rounds....

Looks like you drafted from close to the middle of your league and it looks like, for the most part, these players are drafted pretty much where they would be. I'm not big on taking defenses or QB's where Pittsburgh and Hasselbeck are listed, myself. I may be out of line with that since I don't know your leagues scoring (maybe defenses and QB's carry more weight?) but for me I would have looked to my third RB in the 5th round depending on who was still there and backed that up with Martin in the sixth and taken a second QB in the ninth. Still would have allowed you an early (10th round) pick of a top defense and improvement at RB over Duckett. Overall I think this makes a decent team. Your starters have been in a good groove over the past few seasons and have shown good consistency. You'll win games if it continues. Nothing wrong with Barber and Holt. Ward and Dunn should be decent for you too. I guess this is where the question lies... 2nd receiver in the third and 2nd back in the fourth but based on most ADP's I've looked at you got value for the picks. If this is how you have them ranked it's neither smart nor stupid. It is what it is.

I think the first 6 players here are rock solid. I disagree with the the player that said that you have to take unnecessary gambles in order to build a championship team. Just because the players on your team are not the "sexy" picks for the year doesn't mean that they cannot be explosive from a fantasy perspective. People get all excited about finding the big steal and take guys like Joseph Addai and Tatum Bell way too early, looking for that "explosive" player. There is a place in a draft to take some risks, and it's LATE. The team listed above is very solid.

That said, I don't like the Martin pick. There is nothing "safe" about him. He's in a terrible offense, coming off of knee surgery at the age of 33. I know that is the place where he'll be taken, but I really don't like Martin this year. Talk out of the Jets camp about Martin not being able to carry the load any more is not encouraging either.

the key to fantasy football has always been finding the correct mix of consistency and explosiveness.

i agree---too often people reach for one or the other (" i needed someone i could count on" ; "i needed someone who has a chance to go off"). obviously, the top players are the ones capable of both----lj, sa, lt, manning, TO, moss, etc.

i have to agree about mediocrity---a team built upon it will more than likely finish in it.

I would rather have a safer player, a more consistent scoring player than to high risk of a player.

But what do you mean by safe.

After a while I get skittish on veteran name players. Wondering if this is the year they fall off the map at the price of such a high draft pick.

I will add the following:

1. each year there is a football player that people on this board are divided over.

Reason is the player will score in bunches and will finish in the top 10 at their position.

Now this means, some weeks, that 1 player may score enough for you to win. ala the Lottery Prize.

However, all the other weeks, they will disappear from the screen and if you played them. A goose egg on your sheet. Thus you may find yourself guessing when the week will occur. Rotating this binge/purge with a more consistent and reliable player.

2. I find the topic on "finding the explosive" or "differentiate draft" to fit the NCAA Basketball board scenario where you look to find the upsets. I think it easiest to sum it up this way. You go to the Tom Thumb and have 1 dollar. you could buy a scratch off ticket or a powerball. Powerball is reset, so it is only 15million. Where as the scratch off has prizes up to 10,000. The odds are better with the scratch off. So which one did you buy?
