Changing gears during the draft.

Recommended Posts

I'm very much a stud RB guy. I typically rank a double digit number of RBs before anybody from any other position. This year there are 13 RBs that top my list.

I just finished up a 12-team mock draft. I was picking 9th, serpentine order. Seeing that I had the 9th and 16th overall picks, obviously I'd get one of my top 13 RBs and I fully expected another one to drop to me in the second round.

Apparently this was a mock draft full of stud RB guys. My top 13 backs were gone in the first 13 picks. Unbe-freakin'-lievable. :first:

There were still some decent RBs available, but they were your Droughns-Dunn-FWParker types. I figured that all the RBs available to me in the second round...well, I could get very similar value in the third round. So I took a look at the other positions available. All WRs other than Steve Smith were available. And no QBs were chosen. On my board, Peyton Manning occupies the top tier at QB by himself. So I snapped him up. So after two rounds I had Rudi Johnson and Peyton Manning.

In the third round I went back to RB and picked up a decent yardage guy in Warrick Dunn. Slight mistake there, not because Dunn is bad value in round 3, but he and Rudi have the same bye week. So I did make sure to pick up a decent stop gap RB later (Frank Gore).

The entire draft:

1.09 Rudi Johnson RB CIN

2.04 Peyton Manning QB IND

3.09 Warrick Dunn RB ATL

4.04 Hines Ward WR PIT

5.09 Derrick Mason WR BAL

6.04 Frank Gore RB SF

7.09 Matt Jones WR JAX

8.04 Terry Glenn WR DAL

9.09 Jake Plummer QB DEN

10.04 Vernon Davis TE SF

11.09 Brandon Jacobs RB NYG

12.04 Roddy White WR ATL

13.09 Alex Smith TE TB

14.04 Jacksonville Jaguars DT JAX

15.09 Nate Kaeding PK SD

16.04 Amani Toomer WR NYG

I can understand your not wanting to grab a 2nd RB if that's all that was available, but I would have gone WR myself in that position. While Manning is in a Tier by himself, you could have gotten better value with that pick IMO with a top WR. Manning's clearly the best, but people that took him early last year were disappointed. Unless he puts up 50TD's, I think you will be too.

What else was available at TE? I think the hype machine on Vernon Davis is getting out of hand. I think he'll be a bye-week filler this year at best. This is SF we're talking about.

i love manning...great Qb....hall of famer etc....but everytime i take him...i lose value everywhere in my draft. i will avoid him and let someone else deal with him.

Don't listen to these bashers, it's a very solid squad. I like Ward most then others, but I think his double digit TD's 3 of the last 4 years proves he's a legit #1. Rudi is a legit #1. Dunn as a #2 is solid. You just need Mason and Jones to step it up. The only weakness is you don't have that explosive player everyone likes, but Manning can easily fill that void if he returns to the 40 td arena.

Minimum stats (combined yards)

Manning - 4000/30

RJ - 1400/10

Dunn - 1600/6

Ward - 1100/10

Mason - 1000/6

Jones - 800/6

I think you picked a legit squad. Some people here can't fathom a team without LJ, SA, or LT being any good. Can't believe Toomer fell that far, there must be no Giant homers in the mock.

Yeah, it's a mock. I'm spending the summer practicing for the real thing. This particular mock just stuck out because I never would have believed that I'd pick Manning, even in a mock. But he actually dropped. First time I'd ever seen him drop out of the first round.

The tight ends went surprisingly quickly, too. I can usually pick up a decent one, but they'd go faster then I wanted. Through the middle part of the draft I was going "I need a TE, but T Heap will be available inthe next pick so let me pick up a good backup RB or WR." "C Cooley should be available next pick." "Heath Miller or Kellen Winslow should be available next pick." Ten or eleven of them were already gone.

its a decent squad man, but you should have passed on Manning and went WR you can grab a qb like Hasselback in the 6th which is good for 3,600/24 tds average. The main problem with Manning is that you are always drafting from behind and if your #3 back is gore and one of your studs gets hurt you are really screwed.
