Fundraising Ideas

Recommended Posts

We've known these people for years, and their daughter was just diagnosed with a rare from of Leukemia. They also have a three year old, just built a house, and have yet to sell their other house. They're going to be facing a long road. They've already started chemo, but have a long way to go. Docs say the odds are 50/50.

So, we've started contacting friends to see how much money we could start pooling to help them out. Because of chemo, their three year old cannot go to daycare and then have any contact with the one year old for fear of infection. So, one of them will not be working this year. In addition, they'll have to be about 100 miles from home for weeks at a time, and one of them will likely be traveling at least a couple times per week.

I'm starting to think we should setup some kind of fund to help them, but I have no idea where to start. I'm thinking a website might be a good idea, and I have the skills and connections to probably pull it off for free.

Any other suggestions for fundraising?

Thanks.

Over the course of about four years, one of my friends had leukemia and her brother had testicular cancer. Both had big benefits thrown for them that brought in a lot of money. There were silent auctions at both, bands at both, that kind of thing. One of my friends' neighbors (I think) did another fundraiser for her. The woman was a hair stylist and brought in a bunch of her coworkers and did hair cuts, colors, make up, manicures and pedicures and all the money from that went to my friend's bills (Northworst let her go after she finished her first major round of chemo).

Both of them are doing well now (her brother went to Lance Armstrong's doctor). My friend even managed to get knocked up recently. I hope for similar good results for your friends' kid.

I had a cousin that was shot 11 times by a road rage fanatic, and organized the same thing.

The website I put up was a great communication tool for the friends and family. I had a page where people could post messages. That was the biggest draw of the site. Many folks left well wishes, and they were read to my cousin nightly as he was on shaky grounds. It also served as a way for those who saw him to post status on how he was doing.

You should also add a way for friends to donate money, ideally by credit card. You could either develop it yourself, or use a secure system aready out there.

We also ran a 'beef-n-beer'. We rented a hall, charged $25 per ticket, had the food, hall, band all donated, sold T-shirts and raffle tix. The event raised close to $40K.

You could run a comedy night and bring in good comics. Nothing helps mourning friends like laughing.

A silent auction is a huge money maker, but is also a huge abount of work. You could do the silent auction in conjunction with any fundraising event.

Good luck!

I think that Probie was just doing a golf tournament to raise some money. There were some good ideas on how to do that sort of thing in a prior thread. Not sure whether you have enough time for that, but that might be a start.

They had one here at the polish falcons for charity. $50 buy in if you did it in advance and 65 if you did at the door. They had something like 170 people there and only payed 8 places. In michigan the max payout for first is $500 bucks. So it went 500,300, 200, 100. So they paid out 1,100 and made almost 7,500.

Some great suggestions so far. Thoughts and prayers to the child and her family. :(

Thanks Spider.

It's just so hard to even think about. You never think these things will impact someone you know. A bone marrow transplant is also on the agenda, assuming chemo goes well. It's a scary proposition.

I've had experience with local workout places/gyms... they would sell 10-day passes for $10 and 100% of the proceeds are kept for "the cause."

I'd suggest start calling around and see if local gyms or salons would donate gift certificates to sell or, in the example above, offer free passes to their facilities and you sell'em and keep the proceeds. Win-win... they get lots of traffic and the family benefits, too.

You should also contact the school, and see they would be willing to lend a hand. Maybe the kids could run some type of 'marathon' to raise money. Everyone gives money to kids.
