Why the Lee Suggs deal was good for the Jets

Recommended Posts

I decided long ago that Suggs agent must be PT Barnum. Never has someone gotten more hype for doing less.

The guy did score 22 touchdowns in one season at Virginia Tech.

Unfortunately, all he's done in the NFL is get hurt.

The guy is a career backup who can't stay healthy. The only difference between he and Najeh Davenport is bowel control and the fact that Davenport has actually produced in that backup role.

Suggs is a career backup because he can't stay healthy.

Vilma is a smallish middle lineback who could actually thrive in the 3-4. The Jets strength on defense is also at linebacker where they have Vilma, Barton, Hobson, Schlegel (looks very good in camp), Kassell and Chatham. There is no way you can say the Jets have better lineman with Ellis, Robertson, Oelhoffen and Bryan Thomas.

Another idea behind the move is to use Thomas as a hybrid DE/LB much like Abraham played in the past.

the only thing wrong with the Jets defense that leaves it unsuited for the 3-4 is the lack of a true nose tackle and dont think the Jets dont know this. word has it they have been actively looking for a big run stuffer. Unfortunately Sione Pouha is hurt.

2 years ago with nearly the same personel on defense minus abraham, the jets came a FG away from the AFC championship game.

last yr they suffer the following injuries: chris baker, eric barton, chad pennington, jay fiedler, curtis martin, derrick blaylock, jason fabini, kevin mawae.. all of whom were starters and significant parts of the puzzle. how were they supposed to be any good?

bartons back, bakers back, penny is back... mawae and fabini have been replaced by youth with ferguson and mangold. blaylock is back... fielder is gone and now the Jets have a much better backup QB plan with Ramsey and Clemens (anything beats Testaverde and Bollinger right?)

This team has lost Martin and Abraham. Dont bother saying Law because he was not a Jet for their playoff run in 04. However the team has added Andre Dyson and Kimo Von Oelhoffen. Not great but not bad.

add on the fact of a weak schedule and i see the Jets winning 7 games this yr minimum. Im not going to say i feel they have a shot at the playoffs but i do feel they will finish ahead of buffalo in the East and have a real shot to finish ahead of NE.

The Pats won 10 games and a playoff game with an injury situation that's as bad as it gets putting six Dbacks on injured reserve including their emotional leader in Rodney, losing Light and Koppen for the year and having Dillon, Faulk, Pass, Bruschi, Troy, Seymour, Graham, Givens and Kazcur miss considerable time. Overall they had three whole units (Dback, Oline and RB absolutely decimated) but still didn't implode like the Jets.

I appreciate your enthusiasm but it's a monster longshot that the Jets even have a shot at finishing ahead of the Pats and that's even if Mangini does prove he can be a big time coach and that still remains to be seen.

Lots of guys have had gaudy college numbers but failed to pan out in the pros.

When healthy the guy has never performed at a level to warrant the hype. Guess it's a moot point because he flunked his Jets physical. His NFL career is effectively over.

Of course. But there are guys who do things in college which warrant the hype, and IMO Suggs is one of them. That is backed up by the fact that he got picked in the middle of the draft despite the fact that he was going to be unable to play for the vast majority of his rookie year due to an injury he had at the time. A poor man's McGahee, if you will. It doesn't mean anything at this point of his career, but IMO those who don't see why there was ever hype about this guy, weren't paying attention way back when he earned it.
