texasmouth 1 Posted August 15, 2006 I was just informed after my yearly physical that I now have high cholesterol. The fact that I am over weight is probably the biggest contributing factor and I know I am fat but man, this was a real blow to the ego. I have been in pretty good shape for most of my life but the past few years I have been slacking and I have gotten fatter every year. I just started running last week and now I am going to start focusing more on my diet........ I was just informed after my yearly physical that I now have high cholesterol. FYI - I'm back up to 195lbs but my TBC is 294. They didnt tell me. I have an appointment with a dietician (SP?) on September 12th. Typical military doctors, schedule me an appointment a month later. I downloaded a bunch of info on what to avoid in my diet and what I need to start doing. I pretty much know, I took classes to be a personal trainer in 2001, but since then I have ignored all of that....... The two biggest rules are get off your ass and stop eating so much.....I think I will try to get back to those principles.

Due to my situation I really have no appetite so I try to eat high fat/caloric foods. Necessary evil. Here is to both of us one day being sub 200.

texasmouth 1 Posted August 15, 2006 How much cholesterol is average for one day?

The fact that I am over weight is probably the biggest contributing factor and I know I am fat but man, this was a real blow to the ego. Don't think it's just your weight. I know plenty of really thin guys who have had cholesterol in the 300's. The weight isn't helping, but is not necessarily a contributing factor in and of itself. Your diet is probably playing a bigger role. I'm kind of surprised they didn't tell you the number, although doctors are downplaying the actual number more and more and it seems they are more interested in the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol. And don't dismiss cholesterol lowering drugs either.

The person who told me I my cholesterol was high was more or less a secretary and she just told me it was high and I had an appointment with a dietician. I should have asked but I was a little bit shocked and didnt think to ask.
GutterBoy 2,899 Posted August 15, 2006 How much cholesterol is average for one day? it's not your cholesterol intake, it's your saturated and trans fat intake. Your body takes these fats and creates cholesterol from them. Cut down on these fats and increase the good fats (mono/poly) from foods like nuts, fish, avocado. Your weight may or may not be a contributing factor. I had high cholesterol and I'm a toothpick, and a midget. For me it's family genes and diet. Also note it's not the number but the ratio that's important. Also if your blood pressure is fine then that's real good news.
texasmouth 1 Posted August 15, 2006 I do think my weight has something to do with it but the high cholesterol and the weight are of course a biproduct of my diet. I have been reading a lot about it.
PartyHair 0 Posted August 15, 2006 High cholesterol is also genetic. Do your parents have high cholesterol? Mine's hovering right at the 200 mark right now, non-fasting. It stays there as long as I get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day. I'm sure I could drop it further if I would pay more attention to eating better, but damn it. I already get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day. Don't take away my cupcakes, you fockers! Anyway. My parents both have high cholesterol so it's sort of a given for me. I'm not on any medication for it, and I won't be until it gets completely uncontrollable.
moneyb 0 Posted August 15, 2006 I was at 250 and dropped my cholesterol intake to no more 150mg/day (125 was target) After 6 months number dropped to 200. I am slightly overweight but in very good shape. Could ride 100 miles on the bike or run 10 miles.

I say try diet before leaping to a life of medications. Of course, since then I've gone back to eating like crap.
Manifest Destiny 0 Posted August 15, 2006 Cut down on these fats and increase the good fats (mono/poly) from foods like nuts, fish, avocado. I dropped mine from 228 to 140 by doing exactly that. Also, eat more fiber (fruits, vegetables, beans, Metamucil - all good sources). What it does is line your intestines and stops the absorbtion of LDL (bad) while not hindering your intake of HDL (good). Good luck
texasmouth 1 Posted August 16, 2006 Well, I have made the changes in my diet, immediately, not waiting on that. I am eating more fruit, I dont like vegetables. Trying to cut down on the red meat, I am from Texas so eating steak two or three times a week has always seemed pretty normal, turns out it isnt...... I am fat and lazy and I have to make the changes in my diet and exercise plan anyway, this was just the little push I guess I needed.

texasmouth 1 Posted August 16, 2006 You don't like any vegetables? Nope. Green beans, occasionally but I only liked them with butter and bacon. Two no no's so I just stopped eating them. I like starchy vegetable but that doesnt really count. Corn and potatoes are about the extent of it.

Sometimes when I'm really bad, like if I eat 6 hot dogs or a cheescake or something, I'll throw down a huge glass of metamucil to make sure I just sh!t it right out. texasmouth 1 Posted September 13, 2006 Just got my test results back: Cholesterol: 189 Glucose: 88 Triglyceride: 202 HDL: 47 VLDL: 40 LDL: 102 I guess I was flagged because I had a high triglyceride level and a borderline Cholesterol level. This was done in July and I have since changed my diet and started exercising a lot more so I am figuring my levels will be back to normal by now.
