Draft Strategy

Recommended Posts

I've got the third pick in our 12 team, 2 player keeper league draft this year. I've retained Michael Westbrook (2nd Round Pick) & Warrick Dunn (Round 5). Being that I don't really have a "solid" #1 RB, I'm wondering if I should take the best available RB in the draft this year with my first rounder or a top tier WR or QB?

Here are the top 5 QB's, 10 RB's, & 10 WR's available according to the latest FFToday Preseason Rankings (by the way, which published rankings do you find to be the most accurate?):

* * * NOTE - PLAYERS NOT LISTED HERE ARE EITHER BEING RETAINED OR ARE OUTSIDE OF THE TOP 5 QB'S, 10 RB'S OR 10 WR'S (NUMBERS LISTED ARE THE RANKING FFTODAY HAS RANKED PLAYERS ACCORDING TO MY LEAGUES SCORING * * *

QB:

2. Matt Hasslebeck

3. Tom Brady

5. Eli Manning

6. Donovan McNabb

7. Marc Bulger

RB:

7. LaMont Jordan

14. Joseph Addai

15. Julius Jones

18. Reuben Droughns

19. Frank Gore

21. Reggie Bush

22. Kevin Jones

25. DeShaun Foster

26. Jamal Lewis

27. Domanick Davis

WR.

3. Chad Johnson

5. Donald Driver

6. Marvin Harrison

7. Terrell Owens

9. Hines Ward

10. Randy Moss

11. Chris Chambers

12. Darrell Jackson

14. Reggie Wayne

15. Deion Branch

OUCH! Not a lot that looks worthy of the 3rd overall pick is there? Rumors are running rampant through my league that the first overall pick is going to be LaMont Jordan to a team who kept Carnell Williams & Drew Bledsoe and the second overall pick is a toss up between Chad Johnson & Reggie Bush to the team that kept Steven Jackson & Carson Palmer. So that would leave me with Tom Brady, Julius Jones, Marvin Harrison or Randy Moss.

Somebody help me with this as I'm totally at a loss for what to do here! Leave a link and I'll give yours a shot.

In my opinion, you should grab either Chad Johnson or Harrison and take your chances grabbing a RB later on. I would be pretty happy with Westbrook and Dunn at RB, and none of the other RBs available are worth consideration.

It's very tempting to opt for Chad, but Westbrook is enough of risk to miss games once again this year that I would take Jordan if he's there. Another option, if your league allows, would be to trade down with the third pick and move up in the second round (and another later round) to try for Gore or Droughns and a receiver.

IF Jordan wasn't there though, and I don't think he will be...is the 3rd overall pick to high for a Julius Jones, Tom Brady, Marvin Harrison or Randy Moss? C'mon fellas (and ladies if your reading this) I've got two days to come up with a strategy for success! :(

are you opposed to reggie bush for dunn or westbrook's keeper spot next year? if you are opposed i like sharkie's idea and would suggest something similar... hmmm, take whoever second spot doesn't grab based on your league strategy. play for this year... take a receiver, if guy goes johnson i'd grab harrison over moss... or stack for future and believe in the hype machine that's reggie bush. you're in a decent spot because a lot of solid talent will still be available for your second and thirds. i'd go wr, rb, wr/qb... let bledsoe slide and play him along an above average wideout corp and backfield...

add consideration, reggie bush is monster trade bait in keepers and value could continue to rise

Bledsoe has been retained by another owner in the league (and all he cost's is a 16th round pick!). My second round pick is going to Brian Westbrook (1 of my keepers). My draft looks like this: Picks in Rounds 1, 3, 4, 6-16.

I'm not oppposed to Bush (I've got that highlight against Tennesse playing over and over in my head where he started left and cuts back right for a gain of like 20!?!), just not sure what I'll be looking at for WR's in the 3rd round and later if I was to draft him in the first. I'd rather have Leinert though if I was to draft a rookie and have him (Leinert) penciled in in the 4th (or hopefully 6th) round.

I tend agree with some of the others here - take Harrison.

As for QBs, I would go for Eli Manning or Donovan McNabb. Eli has the better arsenal of weapons, but with the addition of Stallworth to the Eagles it looks like McNabb is back in action.

I don't like your RB options. Check their strength of schedule and team additions to determine best option. I am not a fan of Jamal Lewis, but I think good things may happen in Baltimore this year. I don't like Reggie Bush or Frank Gore. Against good defenses (such as Dallas), they looked ineffective - especially Gore.

Definitely do not take Domanick Davis. If it hasn't already been announced, he will likely go on IR for the first six to eight weeks. Instead, grab the backup - Wali Lundy. He looked pretty good in preseason. I picked him up a couple of weeks ago. (We drafted really early this year - about a month ago!) I think he might be a good sleeper pick this year.

Hope that helps.
