Do I get the service plan?

Recommended Posts

Currently at 50,000 miles, bought in May '04 so averaging ~20K miles/year. Only problem I've ever had is a burnt out window motor.

I have an option to extent the warantee another 4years/40K miles (basically 2 more years) for $1500 with a $50/visit deductible. i guess that's only really getting me protection for a major problem in the the next couple years, if you figure $750/year with the number of miles I'm putting on it currently. I'm torn. It would be nice to be basically worry free for the next couple years... but not sure it's worth the $$$ up front. I guess if a couple 'little' things like starter motor go over the next couple years it could wind up paying for itself as that stuff adds up quick, but I dunno.

Do they hagle over that stuff? Or is it pretty much a set in stone price and I shouldn't bother?

Given those parameters I would probably pass. I've bought two extended warranties and both were for longer periods of time and cost less money. Also, realize that many of those are actually outsourced to third parties that treat it as an insurance policy instead of a service contract which means they send an "adjuster" to the dealership when you request service and can/will deny service if possible. I had to sue a dealership once to get them to honor one of those contracts.

If you do, make them sell you the "factory" policy. Much safer & you'll avoid the "adjuster"

Also, you can "haggle" on the price. If they won't, find a dealer who will, you aren't required to buy from your selling/servicing dealer.

What kind of vehicle is it?

Sounds like you do a lot of driving @ 20k/year. In 2 years (making the car 5 years old at about 100,000 miles), you may be headed for some major repairs. In general, I have found this website extremely useful when trying to educate myself about matters regarding cars:

CarBuyingTips

They have an extended warranty section worth looking at. I would look at a couple of things:

1. The coverage. Check it carefully to ensure that expected/normal failures at around 100k are covered.

2. Get a competetive quote. As others have stated, shop around for coverage/rates. One on-line source I used to haggle my new car extended warranty was this one. Bring the quote with you to haggle.

3. Check the coverage as you are signing. In the afreomentioned haggling with the dealership, they "accidentally" checked the "silver" (4 yrs/48k coverage) instead of the "gold" (5 yr/60k) that we discussed. I bitched, then got them to get the platinum (6 yr/75k).

Depending on the reliability of your make/model, it may not be a great deal. I've had my '04 Subaru WRX for almost 5 years (just rolled over 60k), and the only warranty-covered repairs were to a fuel/O2 sensor (around $600).

Good luck.

Thanks, lots of good stuff.

1) it's a 2005 (bought in '04) Infiniti G35 coupe

2) Thanks Chadwick (:D)

3) That rate site is great! I'm going to call them later and get a real quote to bring in.

When you finally decide to drive with great velocity into a wall, I don't think a service plan will make much of a difference.

HTH.
