Kilroy 0 Posted March 8, 2007 I can't find a link for this, but the 610WIP overnight show was saying the Eagles have signed WR, Bethel Johnson. They weren't certain if it was a move to use him as a return man, or if they actually feel he can contribute on offense. I haven't heard this on the morning show (just turned it on), but I know their overnight host was saying they signed him. I'll post a link if I can come across one. ETA: Just heard the morning show people discussing the signing. It's official.
Boston 0 Posted March 8, 2007 If he makes the team it will be as kick returner. Unfortunately he's pretty useless as a WR. It's too bad because during his rookie year he looked like he could be a good one. Yet, he regressed and while not a bad guy he is not a big fan of listening to his coaches. It's not a move I'm too excited about. My biggest concern is that the Eagles have signed him with the thoughts he'll be able to replace Donte' Stallworth as their deep threat at wide receiver. The way the Eagles tend to work, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what their intentions are--while also seeing what he can do as a return man. Reno Mahe was their return man last year. He's a free agent that they haven't re-signed yet, so maybe they are picking Johnson up for the primary reason that he could return kicks and punts. wasn't he injured quite a bit with the Patriots as well? I'd like to see him reach the potential people thought he had as 2nd RD pick a few seasons ago, but like I said, not a move I'm too excited about.
MDC 7,652 Posted March 8, 2007 HUGE move - this is the one that could put us over the top! Seriously, he's insurance in case Jeremy Bloom does not work out as a return man, that's it. If the Eagles don't resign Stallworth they're going to start Baskett, work Avant in as a slot receiver and use Greg Lewis as a deep threat. Lewis hasn't panned out the way they'd hoped but he is fast. There are still a few receivers out there who could be signed as FAs or aquired via trade. I don't see Johnson more than a backup and insurance for the return game. If Stallworth doesn't get the big contract offer he expects, I think the Eagles will get him to come back on a one year deal (in the hopes he can have a good season and give them a reason to sign him to a long term deal). I still have the sneaky suspicion that Tennessee will give him the long term deal and signing bonus he seeks.

GhostofMeanMachine99 1 Posted March 10, 2007 That's what I was thinking too. Any news on Bloom's recovery? I haven't heard anything. The kid's a former Olympian. It appears that he's worked very hard for what he's achieved and I'm guessing he's gonna come into camp in great football shape. In watching a few interviews with him previous to last season, he talked about how training for skiing and football are completely different, and that he felt he wasn't properly trained for football camp. It was a last minute thing for him.

MDC 7,652 Posted March 11, 2007 Did Reggie Brown get signed by someone else? No - he's the #1 receiver. I didn't mention that because I figured everybody knew it. They signed Brown to a long term deal last season.

He had injury problems and was also suspended a couple of times for attitude related issues. He looked good as a rookie (he had a nice TD against the Titans in the playoffs) and Patriot fans were pretty fired up about him. Yet, he never got on the same page with the coaching staff and his ability seemed to regress. By the end he was outplayed by Hobbs on kickoffs and wasn't even contributing there. He has some serious wheels and if he gets his head on straight he could contribute. Yet, he's not a guy you want to count on. Anything he gives you is a bonus. GhostofMeanMachine99 1 Posted March 11, 2007 Texas A&M...Klecko was the Temple kid. You're right. Don't know why I thought he went to Temple. Temple's a funny football program. They suck, and they're one of the worst D1 programs out there (because they can't recruit to a school in the middle of the hood), but they'll put a few kids in the NFL like Dan Klecko and Raheem Brock (Brock was cut by the Eagles at one time). I find it hard to believe that Klecko hasn't done anything since he's been in the league.

I find it hard to believe that Klecko hasn't done anything since he's been in the league. The problem with Klecko is he really hasn't found a position. He's too small for the line and not fast enough for LB. The guy works his butt off and will help out at FB and special teams and due to his versatility he'll always find a way to get on a roster. He was with Indy this year and helped them a little. He's a real easy kid to root for but he'll always be an end of the roster player.

Mackgee 0 Posted March 12, 2007 I think Bethel Johnson will definately get them a Super Bowl ring next year...... He may let them try his on since they will never have a ring of their own.
MTSkiBum 1,625 Posted March 12, 2007 Bethel Johnson has a carrear average return of 26 yards. I think they bring him in to be the number 2 deep man on there return team, but he only has 6 punt returns so he probably will not be doing this for the eagles. In addition maybe he could of been brought in to be the number 4-5 WR. But i expecte Jeremy Bloom to be the number 4. Bethel had 9 catches last year, and i could see him maybe getting as much as 10-20 and 100-250 yards as the #5 man. But this very little to ff or to the eagles win/losses next year unless some major breakthrough occurs.
Mackgee 0 Posted February 28, 2008 These are the type of free agents the Eagles will sign! I still cannot believe someone made a topic of this.
