A lead off double for P.LoDuca and E.Chaves just hit a Hr to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. Wow!

6th inning.

Yanks out. Bottom of the 6th coming up.

Mets went 1 2 3.

Top 7 now. Still 3-2 Mets.

Yanks out. Bot 7th coming up.

We go to the 8th inning now.

Rookie Joe Smith came on in relief and struck out D.Jeter to end the inning. WOW! Smith has been lights out for the Mets so far. Willie went to him and he came through for them right there.

We go to the 9th. Can the Mets hold on? Will the Yankees break out of it? They'll have to beat B.Wagner. We'll see.

J.Giambi pinch hit, and STRUCK OUT!

Game over! And the Mets win it. :)

Game 1 to the Mets. :first:

Is this Torre's final weekend ? Yankee fans are calling the fan right now calling for his head (I know the fans do not do the hiring and firing).

Sweep by the Mets and Red Sox next week and Yankees can be 15 games out before June :dunno:

I'll be there Sunday :(

The Mets do have the pitching edge for the rest of the series.

I'm happy that we won the opening game, but I wouldn't count the Yankees out just yet. They are to talented a team to keep losing this way.

Mets are going for the sweep tonight.

If the Redsox can hold on to their 6-2 lead over the Braves in the 8th inning, than tonight's Mets - Yanks game will be a no lose situation for the Mets.

The Redsox just held the Braves to zero runs in the 8th. Still 6-2 Boston.

The Braves got a run and brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th with 2 outs but wound up losing 6-3 to the Redsox. :dunno:

BAL loses to WAS

TB loses to FLA

TOR loses to PHI

If the Mets complete the sweep today, the Red Sox will gain a game up on the rest of the AL East.

Red Sox hold a 10 game lead on the Yankees.

Nope. The Yankees in '78 were defending World Series champions from '77. Back-to-back 100-win seasons and back-to-back WS titles. They had a captain in Thurman Munson who wasn't nearly as passive as Derek Jeter is. That was a team that played with heart, and never at any point of their season did they have 5 more losses than wins.

This year's Yankees (18-23) are coming off a first round exit and look flat as a team. A lot can change between now and September, but in the meanwhile I don't this year's version of the Yankees strike fear into any MLB team right now.

ETA - DAVID WRIGHT
