Question for weightlifters...

Recommended Posts

Ok, would you weightlifters out there that take creatine recommend it??? And, where is the best place to buy it online(ala the cheapest)??? Thanks in advance, i am just looking for that extra something so i can get to "the next level" for weight lifting, deffinently not going to go on the cycle, but, i am willing to try and take maybe a subliment to help me gain strength and muscle faster. I also really don't want to become one of those people who take 50 pills a day, i am thinking just of taking Whey protein and maybe creatine.

I'm 27 now, but I did take creatine while I was in college. One summer using that, I gained 25 lbs while working out frequently. It definitely did work, but you also gain alot of extra weight that you may not want. I recommend that you do lots of cardio as part of your workout

 What creatine does is help you recover faster. So unless you're working out almost every day there isn't a need to take it really. I would suggest for you as a new lifter is it start off naturally. So how it goes and then incorporate things into your routine.

The place to get you supplements is

www.easypricematch.com

They will beat any price you find online by 5%

You work at McDonalds and still need a subliment to help you gain weight?

I've seen your fishing photos. You're like a young DuckStupid in training. Don't waste your money on creatine. Stick with Filet o' Fish and apple pies. You'll be fine.

Great site, generally where I always order from. They have very cheap prices, but I generally compare their prices each time with DPS nutrition because they often flip flop which one is cheaper.

As far as proteins go, you can't go wrong with Optimum Nutrition or Muscle Milk. Just got the ON Gold Standard Banana Creme a week ago and it is AMAZING.

As far as creatine goes, don't listen to anything that anyone else has said, except for GettnHuge. Creatines' effectiveness varies greatly person to person, but the main problem is that people don't follow the directions specifically enough. I've heard a lot of good things about NO Xplode but I'm not personally a big BSN fan. I would recommend Animal Pump, which you can find at bodybuilding.com or for about twice the price from animalpak.com. I've personally had a lot of good gains from that along with the Animal Pak.

Ok, reading some of those articles on creatine...you want to take more right when you start, then lighten up a bit or something??? I read something on how most people will take it for 4 weeks, then stop for 2 weeks. I am guessing this is because the creatine is stored, and then realeased when you workout, and after 4 weeks you will have to burn it off. Does it make you gain weight other than muscle-building weight??? I really don't need to gain weight, but, i am looking to start gaining some serious muscle.

Ha, I guess I should've reread. I guess he didn't have too much input besides referring a specific product he's had success with. My bad.

No offense, but you seem to be very misinformed on creatine, and muscle building in general. Different creatines recommend different ways of taking them. What you're referring to is the "loading" phase followed by the "maintenance" phase, in which you take a larger amount for the first X amount of days, then continue with a smaller amount.

Taking it for 4 (or however many) weeks then taking a certain amount of time off is what's called cycling. Creatine is not stored then released when you workout, and you don't have to burn it off in 4 weeks. Some creatines are continuous and you don't have to cycle them. What most people don't realize is that pretty much everyone takes creatine; it is in a lot of foods (mostly meats). Obviously taking it as a supplement is a much higher concentrated dosage but it isn't something that you "have to burn off".

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "muscle-building weight." What creatine does, to put simply, is increases the water storage in the muscles. Some of the cheaper brand creatines may actually make you look and/or feel bloated. It helps with recovery after working out, as well as can give you more energy during a workout. When you do stop taking creatine, generally you will lose some of the size you put on, but as long as your diet and exercise routine are proper you will still have made gains in size and strength. You're not actually losing muscle, however, just the water being retained in the muscle. Because of this, you may look more "dry" and vascular, which is another bonus. HTH.

(BTW, if you'd like to know a lot more, read reviews of different creatines, read personal experiences, etc. I'd highly recommend checking out the forums on bodybuilding.com. There's a ridiculous amount of helpful material there, and thousands of people that are glad to answer any questions.)

EVERYONE'S BODY IS DIFFERENT!

I haven't lifted for months, but I have cut shoulders and triceps ... just naturally. Pecs are easy, I went big pecs once, don't wanna go back ... biceps are hard. I can do curls all day and not get biceps. Traps, also, I can get them but it takes work.

Thighs, calves, sure ... always been "fast" ... I got good feet. Fast feet. Plus, I'm smart, can fake a lateral, never much of a spinner though, more of a cut to the outside guy ... and nobody could catch me ... once I got going. Anchor man on my Jr. High relay team .... and I'd just tell them, "I don't care who they have, you just get me even, we make a good batton pass, and I'm gone." Nobody could beat me. Bad 40 time though. Liked to sprint, but didn't like blocks. Childhood swimmer. I don't remember learning too swim, like learning to walk ... came natural. I never knew anyone that could keep up with me on a mountain bike, particularly in an urban setting, and I hit a bad jump ... one time, or came down too hard, I have a general idea of when I REALLY hurt my back. Before mountain bikes had suspension.

And that's what I should do. I should swim, sprint, ride a bike, and lift weights but not to any extreme. If I did all that ... I'd be in great shape.

Prolly hafta give up beer and smokes. Getting old sucks.

And as far as nutrition goes ... I'd stay away from anything that is supposed to add bulk fast. That's not healthy. They say, under a perfect diet, and a regimented lifting routine, you can't gain more than 10 pounds of muscle in a year.

So, if you are 185 ... and you wanna be 250 in a couple years ... that's not healthy. If you are 200 and you wanna be 300? That's even worse.

Also, the beauty of a regimented lifting routine, is calories burned to muscle. You can eat for days. So, what you really want to do is feed yourself, carbs, protien like chicken and fish, sometimes beef ... go aheahead have some cheese, have a couple beers ... and trust me, you don't need any suppliment other than a daily vitamin .... you just gotta go to the gym EVERY day.

1 hour. You don't hafta lift the whole time, but spend 1 hour at the gym every day, 5 days a week. You can be standing by the water cooler .... but stay 1 hour, every day.

You'd be amazed what can be accomplished with proper nutrition and training. Frankly, I knew guys that took roids, and I was stronger than them, because they didn't work out as hard as I did.

My old daily workout started small, sets of 8, 135 on the bench. Eventually got to 5 sets of 10, 155, every day. Yeah, it's smaller than 185, but I used to be able to do that. 5 sets of 10, 155 pounds. Took me about 9 months to get there. Maxed 265.

I was 185 pounds. Almost ... 20 years ago. 205 now .... and I pushed a jeep onto a trailer a couple weeks ago. I'm still pretty strong.

My brother, on the other hand ... went bulk, and had bets on his max ... and he won a bet with me, he benched over 300 lbs. He's shorter than me, and not as athletic. Got to benching like 350, but he weighed 235 at 5 foot 9. I never had a desire to bench over 300 lbs, or to add bulk. Today, my 43 year old, older brother weighs more than my almost 70 year old, type 2 diabetic, father. I'm afraid for his health. He's got 2 kids, he needs to do some aerobic exercise .... but he wont do it.

I gotta make him think it's cool ... I gotta do it .... and then he wont be able to stand it (I started lifting weights first) if I get in shape.

But, mass ... building, weight gain programs .... BAD! Trust me. Don't go there. It's too hard to reverse.

If you gain more than 10 lbs in a year ... yer doing it wrong, IMO.

I know it's supposed to be the other way around, but my older brother wants to be like me. He looks up to me. He doesn't listen ... but he knows I'm right. I remember the conversation.

"The problem is, if you ever stop lifting ... you wont lose the weight."

"But, I'll never stop lifting."

"Yeah ... I've said that before too ... but you never know when your life might become so busy ... you start to lift less, and then ... these peaks you've reached (beacause lifting is all peaks and valleys) are gone. That's it ... it's all downhill."

Stay away from the pound builders, and the drugs .... and just work out! Swim, run, bike, etc. That's healthy.

I use NOXplode. I suggest what cdub says...start off naturally if you're new to lifting. Use lots of free weights to start then as you gradually get stronger start to add your supplements.

I would recommend using whey protein post workout about 30-45 minutes after working out. Personally, I use Muscle Milk even though it contains high fat.

I have ... amazingly tight hamstrings. I can run, pretty fast. Told once, during physical therapy for my back, "You have the tightess hamstrings I have ever seen." and I also have a tight lower back, and it hurts ... but I am seriously fast. Sprint. Nobody, and I MEAN NOBODY, that's 200 pounds plus can get away from me. Little guys, 135 pounds, 5 foot 6" ... I could never catch 'em ... but a man my size or taller .... I wonder sometimes if I mighta made the line "The only white CB in the NFL ... is a focking poosay." true ... but I never made the NFL.

Guaranteed though, I am a SHUT DOWN corner. Can't catch, or I'd be a WR ... but I will shut down, ANYBODY, anytime. NOBODY can outrun me by much, either. I got a motor ... and I never give up.

As a kidney patient(Membranous Glomerulonephritis) I'm wondering if I can take Whey Protien. I don't see anything in the ingrediants but will check with my Doctors.

I've never taken suppliments and it drove me nuts when I was intially in the hospital cuz they kept asking me over and over if I had taken creatine. I wish I did, then I could blame this disease on something.

Anyway after another round of immuno suppressives I'm just starting to lift free wieghts again and was wondering what I could take, if anything...

I just want some more energy as my disease makes my kidneys release 25 to 30x too much protien through my urine before it can get distrubuted to my body(and more importantly my muscles).

I'm so frickin' tired now after getting deprived of protein for 18 months now I wanna boost in my energy.

Ideas...?

I would go on whatever advice your doctor gives you. Even though there has never been any long term studies on the effects of creatine or whey protein doing damage on the human body (or steroids for that matter), doctors will still tell you not to use it.

You say you that you have had your routine down for awhile. Hopefully that does not mean you have been doing the same thing for a year and half. one of the best things you can do is to mix up your workouts. Your body gets used to doing the same exercises and they lose their effectiveness. By mixing up your routine a little bit you will see better results.

I took creatine for awhile and it messed with my stomach for the first week or two. After about 2 weeks my body got used to it and everything went back to normal. Also make sure you are taking a multivitamin.

No, and no. Between that pointless babble and mumblings, the things that were actually aimed towards a response to the original question didn't make much sense or were incorrect. HTH

That's true, but if you consider yourself a serious lifter, than the typical "one-a-day" or standard "multi" isn't gonna cut it. This is why I preach about the Animal Pak. It may be a bit pricey but it contains an assload of vitamins, minerals, etc that your body desperately needs when putting it through the abuse that we put it through every day at the gym. The standard multivitamin is for the couch potatoes. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, but, i think i will, at least for now, stay somewhat natural. I do think i will introduce Whey protein and maybe a strong multi vitamin. Creatine might be something i take eventually, but, right now with college coming up i really have to concentrate on other things and not worry about what dosage of creatine and whatever other subliments i have to take today.

I would say so far though, i have done pretty well going natural, i don't think i need too much help. I know Whey and a multi-vitamin are very safe and healthy and can be effective. Honestly, i just want to look really good for college, the chicks up at central are amazing... :D

I have had some success with creatine and used Phosphagen HP from EAS. Never had any side effects whatsoever. Gained about 7-10 pounds of lean muscle. Never did a loading phase. Just drank one a day plus a scoop in a shake.

That being said. Today I would not take it. A good diet with added protein works better than anything else for me. Multivitamin is all I take from a bottle.
