i'm gonna go ahead and guess you guys mean EMPIRE of the sun by steven spielberg - and yes that was his big break out role when he was 13. rising sun was that retarded movie with wesley snipes and sean connery about the japanese in america based on michael crichton's book. not even in the same league.

 

anyway, bale was so good that the national review board created an award for him... best juvenile performance. never given before. and he was absolutely brilliant as the voice for Howl's moving castle. it's a japanese anime, and if you're into that kind of thing you have to see it.
