redtodd 7 Posted October 10, 2007 Have any of you ever tried to negotiate the price of a used vehicle online? I know you can do it with a new car, but was curious if anyone ever had success with doing it with a used car. I'm not thinking of committing to the car, but if I can email a dealer and say "Will you take this price" and if so, go check it out and if it checks out to be OK buy it at the price we agreed upon. I don't want to drive 30 miles to check out a car and then not be able to negotiate or have to deal with the BS negotiating tactics of those clowns. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
BiPolarBear 497 Posted October 10, 2007 Hey we're all Bozos on this bus. I sell used cars and was the internet mgr. at another dealership. Most dealership will acept doable offers. There are some that won't (control freaks), but that would be the type dealerships that will not be getting your business. It's a good idea in theory but does not make sense to the buyer in general. You are going to get the rock bottom price on a car that you have neither seen or driven. You then show up at the dealership & the car may not be as pristine as advertised or you are not happy with the condition of the tires etc..... Now you are going to have a hard time haggling down even further because YOU agreed on a price prior. Go see the car & drive it. If you like it, throw out your offer. If they balk, walk. Don't Give your last name or the town you live in or your PH#. Call back in two days & ask for the Manager. Tell him you were in, who you worked with & what you offered. See if he will budge. Let Da Big Dog Eat 42 Posted October 11, 2007 My Dad owned a dealership. It is worthless to talk to anyone under the UC manager. And, it needs to be done in person because they want a sig and a check. FWIW, there is at most 2 and generally only 1 person in the whole dealership who knows what they have in any given car. So, negotiating with anyone but the New/Used manager is pointless. Always face to face, with your checkbook in front of you on the desk, closed. One more thing, as you start to write the check, stop, close checkbook, and say, "one more thing, I want a full tank of gas, the last car I bought ran out of gas before I could even hit a gas station." If they refuse, slowly withdraw the checkbook and give them a dirty look. They will laugh and say ok. Hey, it's a minimum of $40 for an extra 30 seconds (an hourly wage of $4,800).
