i've always known that cagney was a great actor, but i've never found him appealing enough to want to watch any of his films.

so last night, suffering with insomnia, i watched this movie. i loved it! he was amazing and the young actors (the bowery boys) also made the film rich and gave it an authentic feel.

okay, my question is a spoiler so those who have not seen the film should not read further:

was cagney acting like a coward or did he really become fearful in his last moments?

was he trying to deter the boys from following his path and honoring his friend's/priest's request or was he really begging for his life?

bowery boys/dead end kids were in a few other movies as well, like Dead End with Bogart.

The ending is the perhaps my fav of any movie. Why he did that is for you to decide. I tend to lean

towards him doing it for the kids...but then again it's so dramatic that I could be wrong. Either way

it's a greta cinematic moment.

on another note, I get a huge kick out of this movie spawning soooo many Bugs Bunny characters and toons.

Rocky! Come on out with your hands up, Rrrrocky!

it was an emotional moment for me.

it seemed so sincere that i thought maybe he was speaking from the heart.

then again, he may have wanted to do something good in the end.

A lot of people will throw out White Heat as his best gangster movie, but this is better.

Have you seen One,Two, Three? one of the greta unknown comedies and an excellent performance.

how about Yankee Doodle Dandy? playing that role in his 40s is something else. Other than

Angels I always recommend those two cagney flicks.

I always thought he put on an act, for the kid's sake.

Good movie.
