Ricey’s long iPhone review.

This is only the 3rd day I have had it, I have used it for a solid 5-6 hours and I feel like I can write a solid review on it.

I purchased it at an AT&T store. I was in the middle of a 2 yr contract with them, but they said it would be the same price no matter what, even if I was eligible for a phone upgrade. It was $430 overall for the 8 gb iphone. They offered leather cases and car chargers for $25 each, but I knew I could get them off ebay for $5.

When I got home, I went on ebay to get accessories. I got a leather case, a workout arm strap case, as well as screen protectors. Overall price: $12.

Then I plugged my iphone on my computer, you have to activate it through itunes. Clever because they force you to open an itunes account (including your CCard). And its just so convenient to go on itunes for anything. But I’m a true pirate, I will never pay for music, dvds, pc games again.

I started playing around with the phone and it is just fun to play with. Everything you do with your finger on the screen is just so satisfying. I went directly to test the 2 biggest complaints people had with the iphone: The phone aspect of it, and the slow internet without being logged on to a wireless connection.

The phone aspect, I admit is average at best. It takes 5 to 6 steps to actually call someone, compared to your old phone that which usually takes 2-3 steps. The reception was typical AT&T, so I was used to it. Oh, and they don’t take your old SIM cards, which means you will have to take the time to type EVERY SINGLE phone number you had on the iphone. As much as I want to complain about that, I can’t, because it was really good training for the touchscreen keyboard they had.

When I got started, I found the keyboard to be small and frustrating. I kept missing the key I wanted to press. But after a few hours of entering names and phone numbers, I definitely had an easier time using the keyboard.

Safari is their internet, and the usability is definitely good. You can zoom in and out easily so you don’t have to worry about reading small letters. When you are logged on to a wireless network, it is very quick, but when you are not, the internet could be incredibly slow. Like 56k slow.

The text message aspect is fun as well. There are speech bubbles that they show.

Camera is nice to use, but no flash on it and no video or voice recording capability.

Stocks, Maps, Weather are all very convenient gadgets on the phone. I love the google maps on there for live traffic, they can even spot your current location on earth and give you directions from there to where you want to go. Although I wish they just put a damn GPS on here.

The ipod aspect of it is definitely very nice. The videos are crisp and clean, and choosing albums and songs are easier than the ipod wheel (I never liked the wheel). Another cool thing is that there is a little mic on your headphones for answering calls, but you can also click the mic once and it’ll pause the song, twice to skip the track…very cool.

The biggest beef I had with this iphone is that they don’t allow you to put your own custom ringtones on the iphone, you gotta buy them from itunes. You have to actually hack into the phone to do that, but that negates your warranty, which I don’t want to do. I refuse to pay 99 cents for a 30 second clip of “Sexual Healing”.

Overall, it was everything I expect for a phone that cost $400. Although there are problems to the iphone, I am confident to say that it is the coolest phone out there right now. Oh, and the ladies love to play with it.

8 out of 10.

I've had mine about 2 1/2 weeks and I'll give it a 7.5. Overall I like it. As you said, the phone is just average. Emial IMO is below average. Unlike the blackberry, it doesn't force messages to you when the arrive. It searches every x amount of minutes depending on how you set it. This can cause the battery to drain if you have it set to check too often. The other thing I do not like is you can get or send pictures or media via text msg. I have heard that we can expect a software update June 1 that will fix a lot of these "issues"

But over all  Fun little phone

I just went from a 7100i Blackberry to a Palm Centro last month. Best phone I've ever had.

I just got a Sprint HTC Touch/Vogue last week

It is a pure touch screen like the IPhone but has more features.

Corporate Exchange server support? check

EVDO internet? check (who needs wifi with this? My connection is faster than my friend's iPhone everywhere)

Customizable beyond belief? Check (I can even make it look like the iPhone, including Cover flow)

3rd party apps? Check

I am so glad I didn't take the iphone bait. Especially with my SERO deal at Sprint. I would be paying twice as much than I am now if I switched to AT&T.

Went from a similar blackberry to the treo 650 to the Centro (at&t), and I love it too. Palm os is great, tons of downloadable (and free) programs, video... and it's tiny. I wish it was 3g, but oh well.
