ChiTownKev 0 Posted October 23, 2008 Ok, I have a general question about team management/strategy I'd like to run by everyone. In our league (as in many others I've seen), once a player is dropped from a team's roster, he is on waivers and cannot be added immediately. This week, we have several owners who will need to do a fair amount of adding/dropping to adjust to the Bye week (I'm in Chicago, so plenty of guys have Bears players, and thus have lots of holes to fill this week). Although it has not yet occurred, I can easily envision a situation in which an owner would add free agents then drop them late on Saturday, thus placing the players on waivers and making them unusable for other owners for Sunday's games. For example, the owner who has the Bears' defense on his roster doesn't have a backup D. Another owner could potentially add and drop every other free agent defense, forcing the owner of the Bears D to go without any points at that position this week. I've never done this, and I've heard other people talk about it, but as far as I know, this strategy doesn't violate any rules. Personally, I wouldn't do it because I'd prefer to win without having to resort to such methods. Having said that, I can definitely see the temptation of screwing your opponent out of points at those respective positions. How does everyone else feel about using this strategy? Would you resort to it? If someone does, should they be penalized when there's no discernible violation of the league's rules?
We Tigers 71 Posted October 23, 2008 In my Yahoo league--which has free agents most of the time and waivers only for dropped players--adding and dropping a free agent on the same day means they go back into the FA pool, not to waivers. If you can just put players on waivers by doing that, it's called "churning the wire," and is looked at as pretty disreputable. If the rules allow it, I guess it's not illegal, but it is about as big a douche move as possible (and a rule your commish should change for next year). If someone actually has to risk dropping his own players to waivers to pull this off and hope they're still there when he gets back to them, I guess it's a calculated (but stupid) risk. I've definitely waited till Friday or Saturday to drop a player and pick up a replacement--for example, two weeks ago I needed to drop Lance Moore to pick up a backup TE, since I have Tony Gonzalez. My opponent needed a backup receiver, a scarce commodity at the time, and there were plenty of decent TEs available. I waited till Saturday to drop Moore so he couldn't be claimed by my opponent, and picked up Zach Miller (missed out on Greg Olsen by doing this, but Miller was fine). I see nothing wrong with tactically timing your personnel moves, but I see plenty wrong with "churning the wire" in your scenario.

NO i wouldnt resort to it...it certainly would violate our rule of fair play which allows the comish to basically have god powers if needed but you have to have a comish you trust...I assume you charge for waiver wire pickups or is this a totally free league..if so thats an expensive coch block. We have two waiver wire deadlines...one on wed and one on friday....the friday drops arent free to add in the current week...which I personally dont care for..but Im always at or near last on our weekly updated waiver wire order anyway. I saw players dropped on friday this last week that would of been usuable to other teams...
Bgards79 0 Posted October 23, 2008 This is why I like having myself and my Co-Commish the only two people that can make adjustments to a person's roster. You set your own lineup, but only the commish's can mess with the Free Agent adds and drops. But then again we don't have a waiver wire process, we have a bidding process. SaintsInDome2006 399 Posted October 24, 2008 Well, it's not against any rules in most leagues, that's for sure. And an owner should always grab a player at the first chance because that player could hypothetically be gone by the tim he gets back there to make the move. BUT, if someone did that with defenses, in which there are only a limited number, I would just ask if they know the other players in the league because if they do they'll probably be called every name in the book; FF's probably not worth killing a rep over. And even if an owner didn't know people in the league then good luck the next time they want to trade or in the event someone decides to that practice to them before they have a chance to recover, etc. ... Tricky business, perhaps it's permitted but it's not worth it. In general I consider that different from say picking up one player then releasing them or waiting to release player on a Saturday, which someone else mentions in this thread. Therefore, if he plays his new QB on Sunday and tries to drop him Monday morning and add a MNF WR or RB or whatever, he should get an error message and be unable to do so. He can drop players from his bench who already played and insert someone Monday before gametime if he left an open spot in the starting lineup.
