BunnysBastatrds 2,439 Posted July 14, 2009 Our league has been around for fifteen years. The core group of teams are still playing, but some of them have dropped out and we bring in new blood. It's a twelve team redraft that doesn't allow trades. We did auction drafts up until we voted in 2007 and 2008 to serpentine draft. A few don't care which way we draft and say they will go along with whichever way we draft. Someone suggested auctioning for the first four rounds and then serpentining the next eleven rounds. I can't see this working. There are too many strategies when auctioning. Blow your wad early or sit back and let the draft unfold. Has anyone done this kind of draft, and if so, what worked and didn't work. TIA
WhiteWonder 2,735 Posted July 14, 2009 most auctions i have been a part of allow you to nominate any player available, so I don't see how a blend of 2 would work unless you drafted early and auctioned afterward.

TIA Well the only way I can see something like this working is to take say the top 12 QB's, top 12 RB's and top 12 WR's (I realize it's only 36 players so technically only 3 rounds) place them in the auction. Then start the serpentine draft with the remaining players. Any owner that have over 3 players after the auction loses as many picks they are over the 3. The issue will be determining how your salary cap is going to work. You can't have 48 players with a salary and the rest without. Unless you determine a small salary count that basically only covers 3 guys. Unless you use a predetermined amount for the rest of the field. I think the more realistic attempt at this would be to have ATLEAST 120ish players available to auction (enough for a 10 player core for each team.) Then have a serpentine draft where each player from the "1st round" costing a predetermined amount like say $7. Then 2nd round like $5 and have the next 4ish something like $3 and the last 2 or 3 $1. That way every one has a price but every owner has a fair chance at the top players. This actually doesn't sound like a bad idea. That is if you're not the commish that has to track all this mess. A few teams suggested we auction the first three rounds-thirty six picks. Then swith to serpentine for the final twelve rounds. I don't see how it could work. I think they want to auction, but it takes to long. Last time we auctioned it took six hours. I personally don't care because it's my favorite night of the year.
