FlaHawker 24 Posted December 2, 2009 Chris Cooley: Lewis never talks to CampbellPosted by Michael David Smith on December 1, 2009 5:59 PM ET Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley is out for the season on injured reserve. And now that he's lost his season, he also seems to have lost any inhibitions about explaining what a mess the Redskins' offense is. Appearing today on Sirius NFL Radio, Cooley explained the Rube Goldberg machine that is the Redskins' offense. And he said that as far as he knows, play-caller Sherman Lewis doesn't even talk to quarterback Jason Campbell. "So then what happens is Sherman Lewis, who is our offensive consultant, will install the regular game plan and then we go practice that," Cooley said. "And then on Thursday, Jim Zorn will install the third down and then he'll also install the run game. And apparently, because I haven't really been there, is that Sherman Lewis never talks to Jason Campbell throughout the week." According to Cooley, head coach Jim Zorn is still the guy who works with Campbell during the week, even though Zorn is out of the loop and doesn't know what Lewis and offensive coordinator Sherman Smith are telling Campbell on game day. "Sherman Lewis sits in the box; he calls plays," Cooley said. "He's the play caller. And he calls them down to our offensive coordinator, another person in the mix, Sherman Smith. And he looks at plays and basically calls them - they're wristband numbers - so he'll say, 'Wristband 5,' and that's what's relayed to Jason Campbell, who then looks at his wristband and calls that play. "The funny thing is, is that when we want to call a run play, Sherman Lewis will call and say, 'give me a run' and then Sherman Smith has to pick a run and give that to Jason. So it's, uh, it's a carousel of calls." "Carousel" is a good word to use. The Redskins' play calling is a circus. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/...ks-to-campbell/
Joey Gladstone 33 Posted December 2, 2009 Good. It'll be nice having Zorn back to mentor the Hawks QB of the future, whoever that may be. Not that it has been any seceret Zorn will be available at the end of the year. Just like his his inter-divisional twin Jerry J, Dany Boy Snyder knows how to cultivate a circus atmosphere. WhiteWonder 2,179 Posted December 2, 2009 not sure what to make of this article. its interesting but didn't we sort of know thats how it was it Redskin land? I mean its not as if Sherm Lewis was hired as OC. He was hired to be a consulatant so Im not shocked that hes not working with Campbell one on one or anything. He is there more to call the plays in terms of X's and O's. Making sure Campbell can run them is still the job of the HC and OC. Imo its goofy as fock to even have an "offensive consultant". and the run aspect is a little weird. So Sherm is only there to call specific pass plays and to determine when to run but not what run plays to call... thats a tad retarded.
DumpTruck 0 Posted December 2, 2009 Well this further discourages me from starting Campbell for an injured Matt Ryan....damnit what an ugly clusterfluck.

Low Score 0 Posted December 2, 2009 It is completely bass ackwards. There are very specific run and pass plays that you will try to run in very specific situations. The simplest example for most people to understand is a reverse play when you notice an end starting to slide down the line too often. Or when you want to run a draw on a "passing down" but the Run Coordinator calls for an inside trap to the 2 gap, which would be WTF. Good offenses play the run and pass off of each other...OK, forget that, we're talking the Redskins and frankly, they're not a good offense. Sorry 'Skins fans, you're a good 5 years away from being competitive and that assumes you immediately ditch the owner, GM, several coaches, retool much of your offensive line and find replacements to the underperforming (and some aging) divas like Portis, DeAngelo, Santana, Randel El, Smoot, etc. that are just no longer hungry enough to play. Washington is horribly run and that organization has slowly but surely been driven into the ground. It will take a long time to recover - this is only the beginning...
