James Casey?

That depends on how deep your roster is.....

In my 20 man league I'll be adding him. I've always liked his talent and HOU has tried everything they can to get the kid on the field. He's simply been behind better players (Daniels at TE) and not had his shot...that's why they converted him to a FB and will always keep him involved. He played something like 8 positions in college...he's just a great athlete.

In the one league where I've been starting Lance Kendricks over Jared Cook each week (and somehow I'll probably be 3-0 after tonight), I'll look to spend a few FA dollars on either him, Ben Watson or Todd Heap. Given the unexciting Kevin Walter and inconsistent Jacoby Jones, Casey has a shot as the second-best athlete on this passing offense. Like el duderino said, he played all over the field in college and has just been waiting for an opportunity. Counting on the FB on a running team to serve as a servicable weekly fantasy TE may be a bit much to ask, but his athleticism is reason enough to pick him up this week and see if he has "earned" an increased role in this offense.

Is Casey really a better athlete than Jacoby Jones? Or is he really a better receiver than Kevin Walter? Or can he overtake the starting TE Owen Daniels in the pecking order for targets? Those are all some serious questions. Though Casey seems to be a blend of the three, so the upside is there. But he could be a jack-of-all trades, master of none.

Of those three TE you mentioned, I'd personally invest in Watson (in PPR). I think it's a lock that either he or Hillis will lead the Browns in receptions. He had 5 for 64 last week and since most of you probably didn't see it, he should've been about 6 for 100. He was wide open in the seam for at least a 35 yarder and McCoy threw a horrible pass behind him. Even with that said, McCoy looks like somebody who will improve upon his mistakes and defintely look to Watons and Hillis a lot. If Watson is available in a PPR and you have TE issues, I'd scoop him, though once the Browns get in the red zone, expect Moore to be the TE of choice. Which in a standard league makes Watson=Moore.

Casey is an incredible athlete. I doubt he can outrun Jones, but in terms of the skills it takes to be a good football player, give me Casey. Is Casey a better possession receiver than Walter or have trust from his QB than Daniels does? No and no, but he's a sure-handed player with big-play skills. What's more is that he is a big-play player who plays FB! With all that said, I don't think he will be a consistent force going forward. As long as Foster stays healthy upon his return, he's likely no better than fourth on the passing game totem pole. I'm anxious to see if NFL Network will show the replay of this game, b/c I'll be watching it if they do.

First things first, I'm trying to pull a deal for Aaron Hernandez. (This is a PPR league.) Short of that, I'll be doing a lot of thinking and research into my three FA options at TE. I'm leaning toward Watson as well, since he is the eighth-most targeted TE in the league and has been productive in two of his three games. Sure, Moore is a concern, but I'd say he's a poor bet to stay healthy, even in a limited role. And after Greg Little, there just isn't a receiver in Cleveland that screams 8-10 targets/game now or down the road besides Watson. I'm always on the lookout for youngsters like Casey who have the goods to be the next big thing, but ultimately, it boils down to what player has the best chance to produce going forward.

I wasn't doubting Casey's athletic ability, just trying to point out some things (and I didn't even mention Foster). Casey may be like Josh Cribbs, a player who is great in real-life, but mediocre to fantasy geeks because he does too many little things well, and not one thing elite. (Actually in Cribbs' case, he is elite in all phases of special teams).

As for Watson, if it's PPR, you can do way worse. The guy is a pro and has Colt's trust. His 5-for-60 is the norm to expect. As for Moore, the injury risk is there, but the Browns seem to be doing whatever they can to prevent it. What I mean is since his injury history is concussions, they seem to only be using him in the red zone, and occassionaly lining him up outside (where he's up against a smaller corner or safety). If they keep doing that, Moore could realistically have 10 TDs with only having 35 or so catches. At the same time, Watson is a sure bet for 60 catches, but may only get 3-4 TDs. It just depends on the format. In PPR, Watson is the clear choice, TD heavy, both are similar with the edge to Moore.

I dont know a ton about Casey, but I saw him in the game the other day, and I think he is better than Cribbs already.

The difference, is that Casey seems to be able to do good reads and run good patterns. (at least some of the time) where Cribbs appears to be a million dollar talent with a 10 cent head.

of course, I reserve my right to change my mind on Casey as I have only seen him play once. B)
